RBI action against PAYTM
FOMC - Cuts Are Coming, But March Unlikely !

10 Points.

1. Both the FOMC statement & Chair Powell pushed back against expectations for a near-term rate cut

2. Thirty minutes into the press conference, Powell said, that a March rate cut is "not likely"

3. The statement said "The Committee does not expect it will be appropriate to reduce the target range until it has gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward 2 percent"

4. Powell narrowed down the timeline when he said: "I don’t think it’s likely that the Committee will reach [that] level of confidence by the time of the March meeting"

5. However, both the statement and Powell opened the door for easing after the next FOMC meeting in mid-March

6. Powell readily confirmed that almost everyone on the Committee thinks rates should come down this year

7 Regarding the balance sheet, Powell indicated an in-depth discussion will be held in March that leaves in place expectations for a framework for winding down balance sheet reduction

8. One of the more dovish aspects of Powell’s remarks was the asymmetry on employment: strong employment gains won’t necessarily forestall rate cuts, but weak employment gains would "absolutely" hasten rate cuts

9. The statement dropped the prior statement’s bias to tighten. The statement now mentions that "the risks to achieving its employment and inflation goals are moving into better balance." In the discussion of economic developments, the description of growth was upgraded to "solid"

10. In much of the Q&A the mood was upbeat, Chair Powell said - "Let’s be honest, this is a good economy". Powell clarified that the Committee has confidence that inflation will come down in the context of a healthy labor market, but that it was seeking "greater confidence"
