We aren’t children anymore; we’re just shredded echoes of a childhood, living dolls designed to hold a smile while the organs inside us rot. Every time we move, we feel the thick. This place isn’t a factory, they stripped away our names and replaced them with patent numbers. We spend our eternities stalking the sub-basements, listening for a pulse-beat that hasn’t been corrupted by the stench of the labs. Somehow, even with eyes made of painted glass and hearts built from scrap meat and spite, we still remember the sun; we remember what it felt like to breathe air that didn’t smell like a morgue, what it felt like to be loved. And that memory is the only thing more painful than the hunger gnawing at our insides. Oh, can we? Can we just once remember what it felt like to be small without being a monster? Can we have one moment where we aren’t the thing under the bed?
