πResearchers find Therapeutic Effects of Yoga in Depression
β New research suggests that Yoga in addition to standard antidepressant treatment can bring relief to patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
β Assessed the therapeutic effects of Yoga in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) as well as its effect on associated neurobiological underpinnings.
β This work was supported under the βScience and Technology of Yoga and Meditation (SATYAM) βProgramme of the Department of Science and Technology
β Stress hormone levels and improving levels of inhibitory neurotransmitter called Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA)in the brain as well as autonomic functioning of the brain.
β They estimated biomarkers like GABA activity (Transcranial magnetic stimulation -TMS), Blood biomarkers (Immune system abnormalities via Interleukin system), emotional processing & brain activity - functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Autonomic functioning - Heart rate Variability (HRV) on 70 people through 3.5years.
β Also found that early intervention of yoga can lead to good outcomes and better prognosisand also effective as monotherapy in mild to moderate depression.

πNew Software helps identify patients likely to require ventilator support thus detecting emergency & ICU needs early
β A software can now identify patients likely to require ventilator support in an ICU and referral in time and make necessary arrangements before emergency sets in.
β Software called Covid Severity Score (CSS) Software consists of an algorithm that measures a set of parameters.
β It scores each against a pre-set dynamic algorithm multiple times for each patient and allocates a Covid Severity Score (CSS) mapping it in a graphical trend.
β Technology is being used in three community Covid care centres at Kolkata
β Foundation For Innovations In Health, Kolkata with support from the Science for Equity, Empowerment and Development (SEED) division of the Department of Science & Technology, have developed an algorithm that measures symptoms, signs, vital parameters, test reports and comorbidities of the COVID positive patient and scores each against a pre-set dynamic algorithm thus allocating a Covid Severity Score (CSS).
β This technology has been made available at primary care e-Health clinics in resource poor settings through SEED Project support.
β CSSβ is regularly monitored multiple times by βremoteβ specialist doctors thus reducing the doctorβs consultation time per patient and reducing the doctors travel requirement
β It can help early identification of patients likely to require ventilator support in an ICU and referral, reduce hospital referral for those unlikely to require critical care support, thus releasing more hospital beds in circulation.
β It will also help in providing monitored medical support to those patients who cannot afford treatment or cannot isolate at home due to poor housing conditions.
β The facility can be a huge support for βCovid Care Centresβ with beds and oxygen support only but no facility for invasive ventilation.

πARCI develops cost-effective catalysts for metal-air battery
β A new non-precious metal-based bi-functional electrocatalyst (capable of catalyzing two different types of reactions) can decrease cost and increase the efficiency of metal air batteries.
β Rise in demand for different energy sources, worldwide efforts are being made to develop different kinds of energy devices, such as lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, redox flow batteries, lithium-air batteries, zinc-air batteries, etc. sodium-ion batteries, fuel cells, and super capacitors.
β Zn-air batteries have drawn significant attention due to their low cost and high energy density.
β They are compact power sources for portable electronics and electric vehicles and energy storage devices to manage energy flow among renewable energy generators, such as wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, electric grids, and end-users
β Major challenge for such batteries is catalyst development
β A bi-functional catalyst works for oxygen reduction while discharging the battery and the same catalyst helps in oxygen evolution reaction during the charging cycle. Most of the conventional catalysts available consist of noble metals in their composition, making the batteries costly.
β This catalyst synthesis method can also be used to recycle used ionomers (polymer composed of both neutral repeating units and ionized units).
β Scientists have used an ion-exchange strategy that positions the metal ions in the carbon framework homogeneously, limits the particle size and offers control on composition and size at a very low loading of transition metal.
β Cost-effectiveness is thus achieved by low loading of transition metal, high activity, and high cycling stability compared to many of the catalysts earlier reported in the literature.
β Catalyst also leads to reduced voltage polarization, enabling higher energy efficiency and a stable charge-discharge characteristic.
β The results obtained were comparable to that of conventionally used noble metal-based catalysts with metal loading of 20% or higher
