Lt Colonel John Augustine Washington III, aide de Camp Robert E Lee. He was also the great grand nephew of George Washington. He was the last Washington to own Mount Vernon and would be wounded in battle at Cheats Mountain. He’d later die of his injuries. His death would be celebrated by spiteful Yankee press as “deserved for treason” while he was mourned by Lee. Lee would keep a letter Washington 3 had written him for the rest of the war.

Another one of George Washington’s great nephews was Colonel Lewis William Washington. He was actually taken hostage by John Brown in 1859 but was rescued by Lee. He’d join the Confederacy and serve as an aide de camp to General Johnston. He was the great grandson of Washington’s half brother Augustine.
