ايه المقصود بالـ Melanosis coli؟

🍫 Definition:
Melanosis coli is a condition where the lining of the colon becomes dark brown or black due to pigment deposition.

🌿 Main Cause:
It is most commonly caused by prolonged use of laxatives containing anthraquinones, such as senna or cascara.

🔬 Mechanism:
These laxatives cause apoptosis (cell death) of colon cells, leading to pigment accumulation called lipofuscin within macrophages.

👁️ Appearance:
During colonoscopy, the colon wall looks dark brown to black, but the patches of lymphoid tissue remain light, giving a spotted look.

⚕️ Symptoms:
Melanosis coli itself does not cause symptoms and is usually discovered incidentally during colonoscopy.

🧴 Reversibility:
The pigmentation is reversible—if the laxative use is stopped, the color usually fades within 6 to 12 months.

🚫 Association with Disease:
It is not linked to colon cancer or serious disease, though it indicates chronic laxative use.

🥦 Prevention:
Avoid long-term stimulant laxative use and maintain bowel regularity through diet, hydration, and fiber intake.
