Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic neuromuscular disorder.
It causes degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord and brainstem.
This leads to progressive muscle weakness and atrophy.

🧬 Cause
SMA is most commonly caused by a mutation in the SMN1 gene.
This gene is responsible for producing survival motor neuron (SMN) protein.
Lack of this protein leads to motor neuron death.

👶 Types
There are several types of SMA, classified by age of onset and severity.
Type 1 (Werdnig-Hoffmann) is the most severe and appears in infancy.
Type 2 and Type 3 have a later onset and milder progression.
Type 4 is adult-onset and usually the mildest.

🧓 Symptoms
Muscle weakness, especially in the legs and trunk, is a common symptom.
