One (probably) last point I want to make on the hate speech legislation is that McEntee told the Seanad today that our rights to freedom of expression and freedom of speech will still be protected by Bunreacht na hÉireann and the European Convention of Human Rights.
In 2009, an Austrian woman who grew up in Iran and then worked in embassies in Kuwait and Libya took part in a public conference on Islam where she compared the marriage of Mohammed to a 6-year-old Aisha to paedophilia, stating: “What do we call it, if it is not paedophilia?”
As a result, she was convicted in 2011 by Austrian courts for “disparaging religious doctrines”, an offense under Article 188 of the Austrian Criminal Code. The woman then complained to the European Court of Human Rights alleging a violation of her freedom of expression.
In 2018, the ECHR issued their judgment and considered that the remarks in question were “likely to arouse justified indignation in Muslims” and constituted “a malicious violation of the spirit of tolerance, which was one of the bases of a democratic society . . . and putting religious peace at risk.”
It concluded that the condemnation of the woman was justified under the European Convention on Human Rights.
Islamic authorities in Muslim countries considered that this ECHR judgment proved them right in their policy repressing blasphemy.
There's your protection.

The full contribution from Fianna Fáil Senator Denis O'Donovan in the Seanad debate yesterday on Helen McEntee's Hate Offences Bill.
O'Donovan said he has concerns that the bill conflicts with Bunreacht na hÉireann and that it could be successfully challenged in the Supreme Court or the European Court of Human Rights which would lead to embarrassment. He said the matter deserved a referendum to change the constitution if that was the will of the public.
"The conflict with the Irish constitution is so strong in this instance that I think it warrants (and maybe this is a far-reaching view) that should we consider having a referendum on changing our constitution pre legislation. I think maybe the people of this country should have a view and have a vote as to where we're going in this regard."
He added that in his 30 year career his views had only deviated from that of his party on three occasions but he would have great reluctance putting his name to the legislation.

New invasive species just dropped.
Oak Processionary Moth nests were found on four Oak trees in a Dublin housing estate.
The backs of older caterpillars are covered with up to 63,000 pointed defensive bristles containing an urticating toxin which can become airborne readily and can cause rashing, pruritus, conjunctivitis and, if inhaled, pharyngitis and respiratory distress, including asthma or even anaphylaxis.
They can strip trees bare, leaving them weakened and vulnerable to other threats.
In southern Europe their populations are controlled by natural predators who are not present in northern Europe.
It's believed they came in on imports of oak plants from England where they were accidentally introduced in 2005.

🚨 Child abduction attempt in the Louth/Meath area
Virgin Media News has learned that there was a child abduction attempt made last month when a man pretending to be from the HSE's Home Support Services called to a home and told a parent that he needed to collect their child for an 'out of home support provision'. When the man was unable to provide ID, he left.
The incident was reported to the Garda and Tusla. The HSE is advising parents to report any suspicious activity or calls.
VM News say they could not follow up on the investigation with the Garda as the HSE will not tell them the location of the attempted abduction, only that it occurred in the Louth/Meath area.
The matter came to light when some parents, who use the Home Support Services, received a letter warning them about the incident and then contacted Virgin Media news to query it.
The HSE has suffered two cyberattacks in the last three years in which over 100,000 people had their personal data stolen.

A judge has refused to order the arrest of 53 asylum seekers which a communist organisation are using to occupy James Mac Sweeney House at 10 Berkeley Street in Phibsborough.
This, he said, was due to a lack of evidence before the court about the identities of the persons on the property.
He was not satisfied that all of those alleged to be in occupation have been made aware of the orders to vacate the premises previously made by the court.
Additional efforts must be made to ascertain the identities of those on the property, and that they be properly served with the proceedings before the orders sought could be granted, he said.
Gonna be tricky if they're undocumented...
The self-styled 'Revolutionary Housing League' began squatting at the property, which is being redeveloped by a charitable housing association to accommodate the elderly, on May 12th, the day their shanty town was cleared out by concerned locals on Sandwith Street.

The high level of welfare Ireland provides to people from Ukraine compared to other EU member states is acting as a magnet says Independent TD Marc MacSharry.
Responding to recent proposals to turn student accommodation in Sligo into housing for so-called refugees, The Sligo—Leitrim TD, who quit Fianna Fáil in 2021, told Pat Kenny on Newstalk today that the situation is simply unsustainable.
"We are in effect marketing the country as the best place to come for international protection. Because of the level of supports available here, we're the first choice for many, and why wouldn't we be? And all I'm saying is, that's unsustainable...I mean they're calling it Treasure Island."

🚨 Community Alert for Kenmare
Derek Blighe says he has been made aware a report that an 11-year-old girl was approached in the Kenmare area by what she described as a foreign man in a car who told her that her mother had sent him to collect her. The girl didn't believe him and ran off.
Gardaí were contacted about the attempted child abduction and allegedly told the girl's parents "sure we don't know who's been let into the country."
Derek says he's had difficulty uploading this video to his telegram channel so I've posted it here.
