Traffic using a temporary bridge across the Thames on 22nd June 1934 to enable the old Waterloo Bridge designed by John Rennie in the early nineteenth century to be demolished. The new bridge was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, better known for his work on Battersea Power Station and for the iconic K-2 red telephone box. Rennie's bridge was finally demolished in 1937 but construction of the new structure was severely hampered by the outbreak of the Second World War. It was partially opened on 11th March 1942 although it was not fully completed until 1945.
