در تاریخ ۲۸ آوریل ۲۰۲۵، یک خاموشی گسترده در اسپانیا، پرتغال و جنوب فرانسه رخ داد که میلیون‌ها نفر را تحت تأثیر قرار داد. علت اصلی این حادثه، یک خطای فنی در شبکه برق فرانسه بود که باعث قطع اتصال شبه‌جزیره ایبری از شبکه‌ی اصلی برق اروپا شد. هم‌زمان، یک افت شدید در تولید برق خورشیدی به‌دلیل عبور ناگهانی ابرها، و نبود اینرسی کافی در سیستم، موجب نوسانات شدید فرکانس و فعال شدن سیستم‌های حفاظتی شد. همچنین، یک پدیده‌ی جوی نادر به‌نام نوسان القایی جو، در تشدید این وضعیت نقش داشت و باعث شد زیرساخت‌های حساس دچار اختلال شوند. با این‌که برخی در ابتدا احتمال حمله سایبری را مطرح کردند، بررسی‌ها نشان می‌دهد که حادثه منشأ فنی و جوی داشته است.
این رویداد نشان‌دهنده‌ی چالش‌های بزرگ در مسیر گذار به انرژی‌های تجدیدپذیر است. در کنار نصب پنل‌های خورشیدی و توربین‌های بادی، نیاز مبرمی به زیرساخت‌های هوشمند، ذخیره‌سازی انرژی، اینرسی مصنوعی و هماهنگی منطقه‌ای وجود دارد. همچنین، تغییرات اقلیمی و ناپایداری‌های جوی در حال افزایش هستند و می‌توانند عملکرد شبکه‌های برق را بیشتر به خطر بیندازند. خاموشی اخیر نه‌تنها یک هشدار عملیاتی برای مهندسان برق و سیاست‌گذاران بود، بلکه اهمیت آمادگی زیرساخت‌ها برای آینده‌ای ناپایدارتر را بیش از پیش برجسته کرد.
