This reminded me of something, Fort Irwin CA moved their front gate up the road away from the main cantonment so the official distance between Irwin and Barstow CA was close enough, that they don't have to pay their soldiers cost of living adjustments for being stationed in the middle of nowhere.

Interesting story of the Lady Be Good, a B24D that launched from Libya in 1943, damaged from a sand storm and crashed in the Sahara. All died. But not from the crash.
