What we didn't understand is how powerful this means of communication was - much less under the control of the wrong (read here: evil) people.

Unfortunately, we've come to understand that they've been running the show from behind the scenes for a long time taking full advantage of the ability to shape public perception and promote narratives that favor their desired outcomes.

In related news, the world has gone to hell. It just turns out, much to the chagrin of the good/normal folks who simply wanted to live their lives, it was all intentional.
