â„šī¸ Android Telegram v8.9.0 binary + source code have been released

Telegram-FOSS should follow relatively quickly as usual, you will be notified.

🔃 Main changes: Interactive Emoji in 1:1 chats.

🗃 Changelog:

- Some animated Emoji have been changed to display full-screen synchronized animations when sent in 1:1 chats.

In addition, there are also several features intended for premium users:

- Custom animated Emoji. Telegram Premium subscribers can now upload custom Emoji packs defining different Emoji and animations. These Emoji can then be sent in chats by premium users.

- Privacy settings for voice messages. Premium subscribers can now chose who is allowed to send them voice messages the same way they would select who can see their profile pictures.

- Gifting Telegram premium. Premium users can now buy and send Telegram Premium subscriptions to others.

(This all seems really useless, doesn't it?)

🚩 Telegram's blog post about the update

No sign of server sources yet. No sign of Telegram caring about E2E (secret chats) either as Telegram Desktop still doesn't have it. (Only the Mac client that's made by another developer.)

🔄 Telegram-FOSS v8.9.2 is now available on F-Droid!

Refresh F-Droid to update.
đŸ“Ļ F-Droid package

âŦ‡ī¸ If this does not yield anything, it can be any of these reasons:
- You have discovered an F-Droid bug.
- F-Droid repositories are down.
- The wrong 'suggested' tag is set.

You may wish to simply use the GitHub version we link here as it's faster and easier. It is labeled as "beta", even though it's the current stable version.

If you do prefer to use a client, we can strongly recommend @AuroraDroid by our friend Rahul.

Telegram has apparently deleted a whole bunch of our multi-year long channels on various topics. We don't know why. No information was given.

At least the gigantic @NINremix is still up (It's legal!). That took many months.

I'm not going to list any details to prevent scammers from taking advantage. If anyone contacts you pretending to be one of us, be careful. Especially since the death of our friend we haven't been active on TG. (Rest in peace, brother.)

Stay in the channels, maybe the others still have access. When we figure it out, we'll clean up and link you to a shared external platform. (I'm not the 'TG guy' and really got no time to sift through this right now. Our accounts have been shared since ages.)

Use Signal if you must have a 'mainstream chat app'. There are 2 deblobbed forks, can't think of the other, but one is available here. Telegram is a goner, just like we predicted years ago.

Edit: When I get hold of the server dude I'll ask to turn off all the bots, too. It just costs work to maintain. If anyone really wants them to stay on they can possibly stay on until they stop working.

Edit2: The 2nd signal fork is this. No clue about the differences.

- A new "thematic" icon that matches the device's style settings on Android 13 or later has been added and can be optionally enabled.

â„šī¸ Android Telegram v9.1.2 binary + source code have been released

Telegram-FOSS should follow relatively quickly as usual, you will be notified.

🔃 Main changes: Topics in groups

🗃 Changelog:

- Groups with more than 200 members can now have topics, which are individual "threads" of discussion. Enabling topics will cause older clients to become unable to post in a group and will also make chat history prior to topics being enabled unavailable. Note that old messages will still be accessible via the API.

- The bug where resizing chat text did not affect replied message content and link previews has been fixed. Of course this was announced as a "new feature".

That concludes all of the actual (poorly implemented) Telegram features in this new release. The blog post also took the opportunity to advertise Durov's new username auctioning platform, where Telegram revoked many usernames from genuine channels under the guise of cleaning Telegram from Iranian username hoarders only to auction them off later.
