The Cyrus cylinder is a clay cylinder on which Cyrus the Great commanded to inscribe in cuneiform a list of his victories and gracious deeds.
The artifact was discovered during the excavations of Babylon in 1879 and came into the British Museum.
The cylinder became famous after the last Shah of Iran in the 1960s proclaimed the text inscribed on it as the first ever declaration of human rights: Cyrus spoke in favor of the abolition of slavery and religious freedom.
The Shah pledged to build his policy in accordance with the precepts of the founder of Persian statehood.
