Halloween comes from All Hallows' eve(ning), or Hallow - e'en, the English name for All Saints' Eve. In the Celtic calendar, the year began as soon as the dark half set in, just as a new day began as soon as the sun went down. So on November 1, which makes October 31 a sort of New Year's Eve. This was a pagan festival, the Catholic Church later made it All Saints (Evening).
The party was brought to the United States by Irish immigrants in the 1800s, including the past to deter wandering ghosts and the scary-faced beetroot lights (later pumpkins because they are bigger) to deter too.
