Halloween comes from All Hallows' eve(ning), or Hallow - e'en, the English name for All Saints' Eve. In the Celtic calendar, the year began as soon as the dark half set in, just as a new day began as soon as the sun went down. So on November 1, which makes October 31 a sort of New Year's Eve. This was a pagan festival, the Catholic Church later made it All Saints (Evening).

The party was brought to the United States by Irish immigrants in the 1800s, including the past to deter wandering ghosts and the scary-faced beetroot lights (later pumpkins because they are bigger) to deter too. Mischief and troublemakers by young people are mentioned from that time. In the twentieth century, Halloween in America mainly became a festival where small children dressed as ghosts and with carved pumpkins as lanterns went around the houses to ask for a treat or threaten a joke (trick or treat). ⁠We still know this custom as Sint Maarten, where children with lanterns pass the door for candy, but without the scare effect.

Since the 1980s, Halloween has grown in popularity among adults as well, with a particular emphasis on the spooky theme. From America, Halloween has spread throughout Western Europe in recent decades, mainly under the influence of horror films, television series and commerce.
It is explained that this was also the case historically, partly that is true, but in the past the emphasis was not on 'dressing up as creepy as possible' but on 'protecting yourself from ghosts, who don't recognize you when you're dressed up'!
