When a crypto project says 20M tokens are allocated to the community with “3 months cliff and 5 months linear”, they’re describing how and when those tokens will be released (vesting schedule).

1️⃣ Cliff (3 months)

A cliff means no tokens are released at all during that period.

So for the first 3 months, the community receives 0 tokens from that 20M allocation.

At the end of month 3, the vesting begins.

2️⃣ Linear vesting (5 months)

After the cliff, the tokens are released gradually and evenly over 5 months.

So the 20M tokens unlock slowly over the next 5 months.

If it’s perfectly linear:

Total community tokens: 20,000,000

Linear period: 5 months


Each month released:

20,000,000 \div 5 = 4,000,000

So it would look like:

Month 6 4M

3️⃣ Why projects do this
