19 years ago today the US launched its invasion into Iraq.
In the opening hours of 'Operation Iraqi Freedom', an indiscriminate bombing campaign pummeled the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, as part of a strategy that was called 'Shock and Awe'.
A day prior, on March 19, 2003, George W. Bush began his address by telling the American people that the US was in the process of "disarming" and demilitarizing Iraq. The goal was to "limit Saddam Hussein's ability to wage war" and free the Iraqi people.
Some have pointed out similarities between America's Iraq war and the Russian 'special military operation' to highlight current US hypocrisy. Whatever one makes of such comparisons, it should prompt reflection among both Americans and Russians, something which most Americans failed to do in the wake of the 'Global War on Terror'.
America's legacy is clear. Today, US troops remain on the ground in a conflict-ridden Iraq, where some 268,000 - 295,000 people were killed between 2003 and 2018.

IMPORTANT
About civilians in Mariupol.
I just got word from a Ukrainian acquaintance.
Her parents and aunt and uncle were living in Mariupol (she was raised there but moved away for university). She tells me that her family were shot at by Ukrainian Armed Forces on multiple occasions, which prevented them from leaving the city. She did not explain the circumstances of them being fired upon, but said that it had been more than once.
However, they said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were losing, and had finally left their residential area, allowing them to flee to the Russians.
The Russians fed them, and put them on transportation to Rostov (she didn’t say what sort of transportation). They said the biggest deal was that the Russians gave them a lot of food, because they had been starving during the siege.
This is actual testimony from a person whom I’ve known for some time, so I know that it’s not propaganda or nonsense—this is as real as it gets.
I won’t editorialize here, I just want to put down the facts as I received them.

“A good Russian, is a dead Russian.”
“We don’t serve Russians, go f*** yourselves.”
Russophobic signs like these are still being found in London and across Europe. These activities are closer to tribalism, and in the aggregate, dehumanizing Russians will prime the U.S. and Europe for war.

A rupture in U.S.-Russia relations would be an extraordinary step not even taken during the Cold War.
Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman weighed in on the United States' diplomatic relations with Russia, and the escalating tension between the countries after Joe Biden called Vladimir Putin a war criminal.
"I hope that President Putin doesn't take this step," Sherman says. “It would not be to his advantage, and it would not be in his interests, but he keeps making decisions that are not in his interest.”
