๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿง€๐ŸงˆDairy Foods Vocabulary

๐ŸฎPeople have been raising animals like horses, donkeys, camels, goats, sheep and cows for thousands of years. They were raised for meat and skins as well as for milkยน. If female animals were producing milk to feed their young, people could also drink it if they milkedยฒ the animals.

The milk spoiled if it wasn't drunk within a day or two, so people found ways to turn it into foods that lasted longer, and these foods became what we now call dairy foods.

๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿงˆ๐ŸงMilk, Cream and Butter

Most of the milk we drink these days is cow's milk. Like all milk, if cow's milk is left to stand it separates into a low-fat drink called skimmed milk and a top layer of thick, high-fat cream.

๐ŸงCream is used both in cooking and as a topping on desserts, but if it's stirred very quickly or "whipped" it gets even thicker and can be used in cakes and pastries as well. Cream can also be thickened by adding chemicals, and this type of cream is called double cream, heavy cream or whipping cream. If cream is whipped for a long time, it gradually turns into butter.

๐ŸงˆButter is used in cooking and also as a spread, but many people now use a butter-like substance made from vegetable oils or animal fats called margarine instead.

๐Ÿ“š STORY TIME ๐Ÿ“–

BELL THE CAT

There was a grocery shop in a town. Plenty of mice lived in that grocery shop. Food was in plenty for them. They ate everything and spoiled all the bags. They also wasted the bread, biscuits and fruits of the shop.

The grocer got really worried. So, he thought "I should buy a cat and let it stay at the grocery. Only then I can save my things."

He bought a big fat cat and let him stay there. The cat had a nice time hunting the mice and killing them. The mice could not move freely now. They were afraid that anytime the cat would eat them up.

The mice wanted to do something. They held a meeting and all of them tweeted "We must get rid of the cat. Can someone give a suggestion"?

All the mice sat and brooded. A smart looking mouse stood up and said, "The cat moves softly. That is the problem. If we can tie a bell around her neck, then things will be fine. We can know the movements of the cat".

โ€œYes, that is answer," stated all the mice. An old mouse slowly stood up and asked, "Who would tie the bell?" After some moments there was no one there to answer this question.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿฆฑ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿฆฒ Hair or hairs??? ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿฆฑ Hair is one of these mass nouns that can also be countable. Typically โ€œhairโ€ refers to the entire mass on the human head or on the skin of an animal.

๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธSo Sally has red โ€œhairโ€ and Devon has curly โ€œhairโ€.

๐Ÿ‘ดHairs can be counted, and is used for individual strands. So you can have โ€œhairs in your coffeeโ€ but not โ€œhairs on your headโ€ because in the second case, you canโ€™t actually count the individual strands on your head. Some good examples of the difference can be :

๐Ÿ”ฅWhile I was brushing my hair today, I saw a few grey hairs and freaked out.

๐Ÿ”ฅComb your hair elsewhere, there are three hairs in my food!

๐Ÿ”ฅThe detective found hairs on the carpet and has sent them for DNA sampling to check if they match Reubenโ€™s hair.

๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ Learn or study?

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“Learn means "to gain knowledge or skill by studying" and study means "to read, memorize facts, attend school, etc."

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸซWhen you study something, you have not learned it yet. When you are studying something, you are reading books or articles about something you do not know a lot about yet, or using flash cards to memorize facts, or listening to a teacher in a classroom, or watching videos about something so that you can know something or do something well.

๐Ÿค“When you learn something, you make it part of the things you know. When you know a lot about a subject, or are very skillful or knowledgeable about something, you have learned it.
Learning is gaining knowledge by studying, and studying is done to learn things. Below are some examples showing how these two words are used.
โ€ข He learned about computers by reading a book.
โ€ข He studied computer science in college.
โ€ข He is learning a lot about patient care in his nursing classes.
โ€ข She spent an hour every night studying her new vocabulary words.
โ€ข Study the definitions of these words to learn them.
โ€ข She learned how to do her job very quickly.
โ€ข Some people learn best by reading books and others learn best by listening to lectures in class.
โ€ข Students who spend some time each day studying will do well on tests.
โ€ข The children learned several facts about cows in class this week.

๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒปHow to Use 'Say' and 'Tell'

๐ŸŒธIn reported statements, we can use either 'say' or 'tell'. The meaning is the same, but the grammar is different. For example:

Direct speech:
โ€ข John: "I'll be late".
Reported speech:
โ€ข John said (that) he would be late.

OR
โ€ข John told me (that) he was going to be late.

๐ŸŒผWith 'tell' we NEED the object (e.g. 'me', 'you', 'her').

๐ŸŒปWith 'say' we CAN'T use the object (e.g. 'me', 'them', 'us').

โŒSo we CAN'T say:
โ€ข โ€œJohn said me that he would be late.โ€
โ€ข โ€œJohn told that he would be late.โ€

โœ…Here are some correct examples:
โ€ข Julie said (that) she'd come to the party.
โ€ข I said (that) I was going to bed early.
โ€ข He told me (that) he loved living in London.
โ€ข They told John (that) they would arrive at six.

๐ŸŒธ We can also use 'tell' in reported orders. In this case, 'tell' is followed by a direct object and 'to + infinitive': 'She told me to sit down'.

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธACCEPT OR EXCEPT?

What is the difference between accept and except? How do you use accept and except in a sentence?

These are typical questions about these two words. We pronounce them similarly, but they donโ€™t mean the same. Letโ€™s compare confusing words accept and except.

โœ…The first thing is that โ€˜acceptโ€™ is a verb while โ€˜exceptโ€™ is commonly used as a preposition and a conjunction.

โ˜๏ธWe can accept a present, an invitation, an idea or a plan or even an unpleasant situation. Look at the examples below:

โ€” Mary accepted a kitten as a present.
โ€” Mary was very angry, but accepted an apology.
โ€” My friend was very busy, but he accepted the invitation to my birthday party.
โ€” We accepted his idea about traveling to France.
โ€” It was difficult to be a newcomer in a company, but my colleagues accepted me finally.
โ€” People in big cities accept traffic jams as part of their life.

โœ…Except means โ€˜excludingโ€™. Look at the examples below:

โ€” I like all dog breeds except pit bulls.
โ€” Mary wonโ€™t tell you anything about her new boyfriend, except that he has graduated from Cambridge.
โ€” He would buy that car, except that it costs too much.

๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ Vacation or holiday???

๐Ÿ’ƒ"Vacation" and "holiday" are words with similar meanings. They both describe days when you don't go to work or school. There are differences between them, but they can be a little difficult to discover on your own.

๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰Holidays are for everyone
One big difference between "vacation" and "holiday" is that we use the word 'holiday' to talk about days that are celebrated by a lot of people. They include religious holidays:
โ€ข Christmas
โ€ข Rosh Hashanah
โ€ข Ramadan

They also include national holidays. An example of a national holiday for the United States is Independence Day.
If everyone that you work with is out of work on the same day, it's not a "vacation".

๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸฅณVacations often involve travel
If you tell someone about your "vacation" the conversation might go like this:

๐Ÿ‘‰You: I took a vacation last week.
Them: Where did you go?
That's because vacations often involve traveling somewhere.

โ˜๏ธA new word that's become a bit popular in the last 10 years is "staycation". A "staycation" is a holiday that you spend at home.

๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽBritish and other English varieties
The rules above are for American English. British English uses "holiday" in both cases:

๐Ÿ‘‰Monday is a holiday.
๐Ÿ‘‰I'm going on holiday next week.

๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰What about other days?
There are some days when you don't work that are neither "holidays" nor "vacations". For example, if you stay home one day just to relax, what do you call it? It's not a general "holiday" but you're not going anywhere so it's not a "vacation" either. You can call such a situation a "day off":

๐Ÿ‘‰I'm going to take a day off this week.

๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸฅณA lot of people don't work on weekends (Saturday and Sunday). To talk about those days, just call them "the weekend":

๐Ÿ‘‰I can't wait for the weekend!

But if you have a job that requires you to work on weekends, you still have days each week when you don't work. Call those your "days off":

๐Ÿ‘‰What are you doing on your day off?

If you're in school, you also have weeks or months when there are no classes. Those are called "breaks":

๐Ÿ‘‰What did you do over summer break?
