Darien Gap-crossing young migrants up a third - UN

UNICEF estimates that the number of minors crossing the treacherous jungle region between Colombia and Panama known as the Darien Gap will rise by 34% to 160,000 this year.

According to UN Children Fund data, this will mark the fifth consecutive year of record child migration, after 30,000 have been recorded traveling there so far this year - including 2,000 unaccompanied.

In total, a record 520,000 migrants made the dangerous journey last year.
