Dear friends, I had the opportunity to interact with a top doctor recently and I asked him for some tips for aspirants to keep good health in the month or so before the exam.

This is the summary of what he said -

1. Sleep for 7-8 hours. The common mistake most exam-takers do is, to be able to study more and cram more information they tend to compromise on sleep. This will give you the satisfaction of doing your best. But with inadequate sleep, what you read will not form a strong imprint on your mind. There will be very little absorption. Recollection too will be very poor. So it is very important to sleep for 7-8 hours everyday.

2. Avoid sugary foods like sweets, chocolates and soft drinks one month before the exam. Sugary foods will give you a temporary high, but your energy levels will fall quickly, making you feel tired for the rest of the day. So to maintain peak mental performance, avoid sugary foods. Whenever you feel like having sweets, you can have a banana or some other fruit.

3. Brain foods. Almonds, walnuts and groundnuts are very good for the brain. But don’t consume too much. Less than a hand-full maximum.

4. Try to add some variety of spinach or some other green leafy vegetable to your diet.

5. Have 3-5 litres of water a day. Hydration will keep you fresh.

6. Spend half an hour a day on some light exercise. A short walk or yoga or cycling. Nothing too strenous.
