Gas Price BOOMS in Europe After Gazprom DECLINES Additional Transit Capacity in Ukraine (Report)

European gas prices soared to $908 per 1,000 cubic meters on London’s ICE market early on Monday – the October futures spike apparently following the news that Gazprom reportedly did not book any additional capacities for gas transit through Ukrainian territory.

Ukraine’s gas transportation operator had offered transit capacities of 15MN cubic meters per day for October at an auction – but according to auction results they remained unclaimed.

The price steadied later Monday, trading at $881 per 1,000 cubic meters as of 11:00 GMT – possibly in part due to Norwegian Equinor, Europe’s key gas supplier, receiving long-awaited permission to boost gas exports from its offshore fields.

"We've been clear: if you don't follow the rules, we won't hesitate to take action – we have seen widespread noncompliance across the industry,” Minister for Industrial Relations Tim Pallas said.

"We put the industry on notice just a week ago, we have seen appalling behavior on site and on our streets, and now we're acting decisively and without hesitation,” Pallas added.

Dow suffers 900-pt HIT as Chinese property crisis deepens

Early Monday afternoon trading saw the Dow Jones drop OVER 900 points - or 2.4% - as markets reflect the global impact of the Chinese property crisis sparked by Evergrande’s imminent collapse.

The S&P 500 also fell 2.1% and the Nasdaq lost 2.6% as speculation builds that Evergrande will default on its interest payments on two bonds, due on Thursday.

Collapsing market values come as the Federal Reserve are set to meet this week, when it is suspected they will discuss cutting back on their bond-buying program that has boosted stocks during the pandemic.

DOLLAR DISASTER?! Treasury Chief Warns of “Economic Catastrophe” as Congress Prepares to Debate Debt Ceiling

The White House warned that a failure by the US Congress to extend the debt limit could plunge the economy into a recession and lead the country to default on its payment obligations.

“The overwhelming consensus among economists and Treasury officials of both parties is that failing to raise the debt limit would produce widespread economic catastrophe,” Treasury Secretary Jannet Yellen warned in a WSJ op-ed Sunday.

The warnings come as lawmakers appeared no closer to resolving a dispute between Biden, his fellow Democrats, and Republican lawmakers, who have declined to help lift the $28.5 trillion federal borrowing limit to pay for programs already authorized by Congress.
