Clannad - Siรบil A Rรบn 1978
(The title translates to "go, my love" )
"Siรบil a Rรบn" is a traditional Irish song, sung from the point of view of a woman lamenting a lover who has embarked on a military career, and indicating her willingness to support him.
It has been suggested that the song refers to the "Wild Geese" of the Glorious Revolution with the woman who is singing actually talking about a young man who went to France to join the "Irish Brigade" which was a French unit made up of Irishmen who fled to France to join the French Army. During the period of Jacobite Rebellions after the English Civil War, many young rebels from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales travelled to France to join the French Army to fight the English on various battlefields of Europe throughout the early 18th Century.
The song has English language verses and an Irish language chorus, a style known as macaronic.
