22nd August 1922 Michael Collins, Commander in Chief of the National Army was shot dead when ambushed by the IRA at Bรฉal na mBlรกth, Cork. When advised against making the tour of army positions in Cork, Collins responded;
"They won't shoot me in my own county,".
He returned to Ireland in 1916 and fought in the Easter Rising. He was subsequently imprisoned in the Frongoch internment camp as a prisoner of war, but was released in December 1916.
