Ford patented a system allowing a car to drive itself back to a showroom or even to a junkyard if its owner fails to make payments.

The system would take a series of measures, first making driving unpleasant and then impossible, eventually driving itself away from the owner.

The system could start by disabling features such as GPS navigation, the music system or air conditioning to create a "certain level of discomfort" for the owner.

If that doesn't work, the patent suggests enabling the car's "incessant and unpleasant sound" like a chime or beep every time the owner gets in.

The next escalation would be to restrict access to the car on certain days or at certain times.

If nothing helps, the car could drive itself to a place where a waiting tow truck could pick it up, or drive itself to a repossession storage area.

If the vehicle's mileage is high and its condition is poor, it can drive itself directly to a junkyard.
