Any idiot with a beard and a wife with long hair can start a youtube channel in the genre of "off grid". The cuter the wife, the more popular the channel. Change my mind.

I think battle born battery company is finished. wow. The root cause is that they tighten the power terminal bolts thru a sheet of ABS plastic that eventually gets hot and subsides. Now the bolt is loose because the plastic it's attached to is thinner. And to think, this is a premium battery at a premuim price.

In the 2010s there was 1.5 million homeschoolers. Today there are 5 million homeschoolers. More people than ever want to divorce themselves from the system.

The victron interface is really nice. It even forecasts solar prodction based on your location.
This installation has severe shading first thing in morning so theres unrealized prodction in the first hour.

I remmeber as a kid watching the "woodwrights shop" with a host that looked like Gallagher. he always had the coolest old tools. One of his was a bow lathe like this. He was quite a contrast to Norm from This Old House that always had one of every tool... "hang on norm, I'll get my handy dandy planah". Ya'll know what I'm talking about!

Something to think about.... people often think only in terms of insulation for their house. We also need to think in terms of thermal mass. The solar system that was just commissioned is housed in the front 8' of a shipping container. The wall studs don't touch the metal walls and open cell spray foam is about 4" thick, including the floor and ceiling. Inside are the batteries and inverters and the inverters add about 250w of heat to the room.
We have a cold snap today and the temperature this morning is 29F (-1C). yes... haha... cold for us. The temperature in that room is 33F.
Now let's compare something to do with thermal mass. My basement has ring around in that is concrete and steel and no insulation. The outer wall is concrete block 10' tall, 3' is exposed above the earth. My basement got to 59F 15C last night. If this cold snap continues, my basement will get down to 54F 12C... that's the coldest it has ever gotten.
So you need BOTH... you need insulation and you need thermal mass.
EDIT: My friend left the inner door open between the uninsulated and insulated portions of his shipping container last night. But you still need thermal mass and insulation.

We had a freezing night last night.... For comparison... RED is my friend's house power draw through the night last night. His baseload is 500w and as you see as the night went on, his minisplits ramped up.
The blue graph is my house HVAC usage (I can isolate the power draw of HVAC). The last time my minisplit ran was last thursday. All that ran last night in my house was the fan to circulate air in the house. I had to increase the time scale on the blue graph just to find a place where the minisplit ran. The temperature in my house is 71F 21C. Usually takes 3 days for the house to change temperature.
This is the difference between wooden houses with spray foam and ICF construction.

I've watched a lot of AvE's videos over the years.... this makes me sad.
Godspeed Shamrock.
Shamrock was sweet to the kids and hell on coyotes. Best Donkey a fella could hope for.
Turns out the vet knew him from way before we adopted him, small world. He was around 35 years old.
