I'm on the fence about sharing this one... on the one hand this guy has built a monster system and he did everything over the top. On the other hand, it's so over the top that the price might scare you and I want ya'll to know solar doesn't have to be expensive. This is a hell of a project.

Geez I hate unserviceable items. Dishwasher is leaking. Last week I replaced the door seal because it dry rotted. One week later, there's a new puddle on the floor. The pump housing seal is leaking. I can buy the top part of the casing for $58, but the seal is attached to the bottom part and the pump, bottom and seal is $290... and the seal is not available separately. That seal is literally dissolving.
This frustrates me because even if I fix this seal with caulk, how long before the next one fails?

You don’t need a large back up generator. You can combine power from certain inverters with generators to make more power on demand. When the demand is over the generator simply charges the battery. I do this with my system. A 5kw generator is blended with 12kw of inverters. In an emergency 5kw x 24 hours is 120kwh a day and we’ve never used that much power.

How to find south exactly. The best time to do this is in the winter because shadows are the longest. Pin this map https://gml.noaa.gov/grad/solcalc/ to your location and look for solar noon. Drive a stake in the ground. At solar noon, extend a string 4' off the stake that lines up with it's shadow. Now you have a north south line. Use the above triangle to establish an east-west line. Note the triangle can be scaled to be 3-4-5 or 6-8-10 or 9-12-15.
I did this at a neighbors house a few days ago... shadow is 4', blue line is 3' and yellow line is 5'.
A compass will have to be calibrated for magnetic declination, which is worse in the north west USA. A compass can also be affected by metal around you like a propane tank.
