Hey, everyone. EightyCanadian, here.
As most of you know, I do all the artwork for most of the channels in our network. Art and graphic design have always been my passion, but lately, due to the state of Canada, guys like me can't find work anymore. It's been a rough few months, but I'm finally ready to roll the dice on myself.
Please consider visiting my online shop and supporting the channel with likes, favorites, and maybe help a brother out and grab some channel merch. This would really help me and my family out. All designs are done by myself.
Godbless.

This wont apply to really any of you.... but I finally solved a problem with my solar. My SMA inverter is supposed to measure the amount of current in or out of the utility grid and limit it to a setting in memory. Since it was designed to AC couple to other solar inverters I figured that limit setting would include the current from EVERYTHING but it does not. Even worse, if I set the limit artifically low, it will disconnect from the grid if the AC coupled inverters go over the limit. But the fundamental problem remains that excess power created by my 48v DC solar chargers combined with the 10kw of AC coupled inverters will and does get up to 15kw and then bad things happen and we disconnect from the grid.
So my solution was to reprogram one of my 48v DC charge controllers. I have two 3kw units and when the batteries are low, both of them make a best effort to make all the power they can. When the battery gets to 55.2, one of them stops making power and the other tries to make 57v. And battery voltage above 55.2 is considered "must export" by my SMA sunny island inverters.
Finally I've stopped the system from making too much power at noon. This wasn't a problem in the summer because my panels are too steep and the sun was way too high to hit them headon in summer. But as we get in to winter, the sun is a little lower in the sky at noon and is hitting my panels straight on.

Schools of thought for figuring out the optimal tilt of your panels.
The text book starting point for your panels is tilted at your latitude. For example, if you are in upstate NY, that's 45degrees so tilt them 45Β°. if you are in finland tilt them 60Β°(nearly stright up and down). In Jacksonville FL, tilt them at 30Β°.
1) you want to sell as much power as you can to the grid and intend to buy back your own power in the winter. Make you panels face dead south and make them a little flatter than your latitude. Example, I'm in South Carolina at 33 lat. the panels that were on my roof were at 25Β° and they make a lot of power in the summer. I would buy that power back in winter. I hardly made any power in December.
2) you have batteries and you want to run the house as close to 100% off grid and only connect to the grid when you are desperate or run a generator as needed. In this case tilt your panels about 5-10Β° steeper than your latitude. In the winter, you need to make enough to run the house, but we aware in the summer, the sun will be above the panels at noon and from dawn until 10pm and 6pm until dark the sun will actually be behind the panels. But since the days are longer, you'll make enough power, just low and slow... like good BBQ. In the winter you'll make as much power as you can in the short amount of sunlight you have each day. Keep in mind that although the sun peaks out high in the sky at noon, it spends a whole lot of time between the horizon and that peak.

I just used this calculator to understand which days the sun will be exactly perpendicular to my panels at noon. I'm at 34lat but my panels are a bit steeper at 40Β°. That means Oct 28th and Feb 7th the sun hits my panels straight on at noon.
Most of the time we think of the sun being at the mid point of it's elevation change at Sept 22 or March 22.... but I biased my panels to be better in winter.

My projecte today is building a gun room. The door will open outward and I'll use security hinges. they have a pin that engages when the door is closed so it can't be lifted off the hinge by removing the normal hinge pin. To prevent prying the door frame wider with a pry bar, I'm installing horizontal bracing that connects to the other walls in the house. That bracing is at all three hinges and at the strike plate.

Something that's amazing to me is just how complicated our government makes things. Our entire fiat currency system, stock derivatives, investing, government funded organizations, not to mention a bazillion tax loopholes and we are to believe that the "only" thing the government can do to heat up or cool down the economy is raise/lower interest rates. But wait, teh federal reserve isn't the government you say! You are correct... so the next question is why does the government permit this private bank to wield so much power?
Another thing is that of crime. When a government is failing, they know the people will be angry. So to get ahead of that, the government has decided that it needs to do away with guns. To that end, they stop putting criminals in jail and those criminals in turn cause crime and use guns. then the government wrings it's hands and says "if only we could get rid of guns, the crime would go down." Do you see what they are doing here? They act as if there's only "one" thing they can do. An entire societies fate comes down to only one lever they can pull.
Does anyone believe any of this? On the surface if we have people in charge of the government who have only "one" choice for each issue maybe we should unplug it and plug it back in again?

Hey look the dollar hit a new low today.... it only buys 1/2682nd of an ounce of gold.
This is NOT financial advice but you know.... if you pulled your 401-1/2 k money out you could covert that money into tangible goods before the dollars lose more value. AND as a two-fer you could deprive van guard and other investment firms of the leverage they have to push all this rainbow diversity crap on companies like Tractor supply, John Deere and others.

HA! My worse solar day to date.... 9.2kwh produced. I usually average between 110kwh and 154kwh.
