Your best protection comes from a good defensive position. You can't have a good defensive position if you are living in a city. Massive populations means massive demands on resources. Anyone within a 50 mile radius of a major city will need to fight off waves of looters and marauders on a daily basis. Even if you find yourself in the suburbs, you are not safe. When people are hungry and scared, they will do just about anything for just about nothing. See South Africa (pic), where middle class white families need to fortify their homes with electric gates and barbed wire to deter suburb home invasions.
