Have you ever noticed a pipe shaped like this under your kitchen sink? It is called a "trap" and it's job is to hold water. We want to keep water in the belly of that pipe because it seals out the smelly sewer gasses that would otherwise stink up your house. Your toilet has a trap also but it is built in to the toilet.
If you ever smell foul odors in a bathroom that hasn't been used in a while, just add a little water to the trap.

Have you ever noticed there are pipes sticking up out of your roof? Those are there to act as plumbing vents. They serve two purposes. 1)the prevent your traps from siphoning all the water out, and 2)they allow methane gas from your septic tank a way out so it doesn't build up pressure and bubble methane through the traps into your house.

We should expect that we cannot teach our children the solutions for every problem they will encounter. So we need to teach them to think and how to perhaps look at something from a different perspective. On March 13 of this year I suggested that George Westinghouse invented a successful air brake for trains by thinking backwards... he applied air to release the brakes where everyone else had attempted to use air to apply the brakes.
To this end, I want to introduce the kids to two concepts about our thinking and our abilities. Survivorship bias and Dunning Kruger Effect.
