For an immersive look into off-grid living in Russia, the documentary Happy People: A Year in the Taiga offers a profound exploration of life in the remote village of Bakhta, situated in the Siberian taiga. Directed by Dmitry Vasyukov and narrated by Werner Herzog, this film provides an intimate portrayal of self-sufficient trappers and their families who have adapted to the harsh subarctic environment. The documentary delves into their daily routines, from crafting tools and building canoes to setting traps and preparing for the long winters, showcasing a lifestyle that remains largely untouched by modern technology.

This film stands out for its authentic depiction of human resilience and harmony with nature. The villagers' deep connection to their environment and reliance on traditional knowledge offer valuable insights into sustainable living practices. For anyone interested in off-grid lifestyles, survival skills, or the cultural heritage of Siberia, Happy People serves as both an educational resource and a source of inspiration.

Cut the grass, dodged the ticks, and now Iโ€™m questioning everything about this build. Do I really need an indoor bathroom if a banya works better? Why cook inside when summer begs for open flames? And rainwater vs. a pricey wellโ€”am I crazy to try it? Wouldโ€ฆ
Almost 270 thousand people have sought medical treatment in Russia due to tick bites since the beginning of the season.

The largest number of cases is in the Sverdlovsk, Kirov, Kemerovo, Chelyabinsk, Tomsk regions, Perm Krai and Udmurtia, Rospotrebnadzor reported.

About 24% of ticks examined were carriers of infections in 2024

๐Ÿก BUILDING A HOUSE IN RUSSIAโ€ฆ WITH AI?!

Itโ€™s not sci-fi โ€” itโ€™s just another day on the plot.

In the latest episode, Iโ€™m back from Moscow, alone on site, and trying to figure out what comes after the walls go up. So I did what any confused bloke with dodgy internet might doโ€ฆ

I asked AI how to finish my build.
(Yes. Really.)

The result? A surprising insight, a minor panic about top plates, and a reminder that sometimes even robots can teach us something about craftsmanship.

๐Ÿš Plus:
โ€“ A rough ride in a UAZ Profi
โ€“ Why Russians build where Brits would call a contractor
โ€“ The joy of seeing families build side-by-side, in the sunshine, with a Basset hound roaming free

๐Ÿ’ฅ Big news, friends.

First: the land in Yeglizi? Total write-off. Next to a literal rubbish dump (chemicals, hazmat crews, you name it) โ€” and a legal tangle with the bank. ๐Ÿ˜… All sorted now, but wow.

Then, YouTube nuked Off Grid in Russia. โ€œSevere and repeated violations.โ€ Translation? The UK gov doesnโ€™t like me sharing anything about life in Russia or Donbass โ€” even faceless accounts are being wiped. Iโ€™m banned in the digital Reich, it seems.

BUT: this is where it gets exciting.

Tomorrow, I head deep into the Russian countryside โ€” like proper โ€œSoviet domik, water-from-a-well, no-toiletโ€ level. Itโ€™s raw. Itโ€™s real. Itโ€™s the beginning of something huge.

I'm rolling the dice to show you this life โ€” not politics, just honest off-grid living in Russia.

๐Ÿšช Off the Grid. Off the Map.

Deep in the Siberian taiga, where there are no roads, no electricity, and no signalโ€”just snow, silence, and faithโ€”lies a forgotten village called Burny.

Here, a handful of Old Believers live the way their ancestors did centuries ago.

Just picked up the keys to my new place โ€” a 100+ year-old Russian log cabin, complete with a banya, a well, and a composting toilet that Iโ€™ll have to empty myself. All of it, land included, cost just 600,000 rubles (about $6,000).

Itโ€™s off-grid living in the truest sense โ€” electricity for lights, no plumbing, and a Minsk fridge from the Soviet era that might still work. This place is equal parts museum and survival challenge, and I canโ€™t wait to see how long I can last when winter comes.

The countryside lies quiet and green, but the old dacha roof shows years of neglect โ€” the ridge cap gone, the boards weathered. The moving-in process has begun, and thereโ€™s plenty of work ahead.

First on the list: fixing the roof. Step by step, this place will be brought back to life.
