Only 194k US jobs taken in dismal September as unemployment barely drops to 4.8%

Hiring fell well below Department of Labor (DoL) expectations last month as job uptake fell rapidly for the third month in a row in their first report affected by expired Unemployment Insurance benefits.

After 1mn jobs added in July and 365k in August, the DoL had hoped for a bump back, but instead saw almost half the new jobs, while overall unemployment only dropped marginally to 4.8%.

It had been hoped that school reopenings, the expiration of UI and increased wages (up 14 cents on average to $26.15 for non-supervisory roles) would mark a significant upturn in employment figures.
