The Houthis have seized control of Greater and Lesser Hanish. These are two islands in the southern Red Sea, located north of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The Hanish Islands are not situated in the narrowest part of the Bab el-Mandeb, but they are crucial for controlling the approaches to the strait. In recent days, the Houthis have already occupied Mayunβ€”located directly within the Bab el-Mandebβ€”as well as Mocha and a number of positions along Yemen's western coast. Together, these locations give them a significantly stronger presence along one of the most vital maritime routes connecting the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

France and Sweden are collaborating to integrate AASM Hammer precision-guided bombs with Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets. This initiative involves adapting the weapon system to the Gripen's weapon stations, weapon-management systems, and digital interfaces utilized for the transfer of targeting data. Upon completion, this integration will enable Ukrainian-operated Gripens to deploy a precision weapon system already in service with Ukrainian forces. Ukraine has previously adapted the AASM Hammer for use with MiG-29 fighters and Su-25 attack aircraft. Additionally, this weapon system is employed by French Rafale fighters.
