In a June 25 joint statement from Bahrain, the US and GCC welcomed the US-Iran MOU, demanded the Strait of Hormuz reopen with no tolls or Iranian control, kept sanctions relief conditional and reversible, and vowed to keep Iran from ever going nuclear.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry rejected the statement as interventionist, irresponsible, and provocative. It said the US military presence in the Gulf is a source of regional insecurity and division. It insisted the Strait of Hormuz sits within Iranian and Omani territorial waters and will be governed under the terms of the US-Iran MOU, not by outside powers.
