Engraved on our raffle axe—words from "My Testament," Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine's national poet

ruzzia arrested Shevchenko at age 33 for his writing calling for Ukraine's freedom, criticizing serfdom of Ukrainians (agricultural slavery, which he was born into) and "slander" of the tsar

He was made to walk 2,500 km to forced military service in central ruzzia, his work was banned and he was prohibited from writing or painting (he was also an acclaimed artist)

Shevchenko was allowed to return to Ukraine only 12 years later, but was quickly arrested and exiled again, dying in ruzzia at age 47 in poor health due to the awful conditions and abuses of exile and military service

As he had asked in "My Testament," Shevchenko is buried overlooking the Dnipro River, at Taras Hill in the Shevchenko National Reserve, in Kaniv

Here is my translation of the poem (adapted from others' attempts)...

"My Testament"

When I die, please bury me
In my dear Ukraine,
My grave on a high mound
Amid the spreading plain.
So my eyes can see
The boundless steppes,
The Dnipro's plunging shore
So my ears can hear
The mighty river roar.

When from Ukraine the Dnipro bears
Into the deep blue sea
The enemy's blood... Then I will leave
These hills and fields —
I'll leave them and fly away
To the home of God,
And then I'll pray...
But I know nothing of God
Until that blessed day.

Bury me, then rise up.
Break your heavy chains
And water with the enemy's evil blood
The freedom you have gained.
And in our great new family,
The family of the free,
With softly spoken, kindly word
Remember also me.
