According to the Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, Israel set up a secret outpost in Iraq’s western desert in the work up to the conflict with Iran and the U.S. was aware of the move. Additionally, per the report, early in the conflict an Iraqi shepherd discovered the installation and Israel used airstrikes to force back investigating Iraqi military forces, killing one Iraqi soldier. MORE: Israel established a covert military outpost in Iraq’s western desert to support its air campaign against Iran and struck Iraqi troops who came close to uncovering the facility, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing U.S. officials and others familiar with the matter.

The facility housed Israeli special forces and served as a logistical hub for the Israeli air force, and was built just before the war began with U.S. knowledge.

The outpost helped Israel sustain thousands of airstrikes against Iranian targets during the five-week campaign by positioning forces closer to the battlefield.

The base was nearly exposed in early March when a local shepherd reported unusual helicopter activity in the area to Iraqi authorities. Iraqi troops moved to investigate, prompting Israeli forces to carry out airstrikes to keep the units away from the site. The attack killed one Iraqi soldier and wounded two others. Iraq condemned the strike at the time.
