Before we went to the surrender point, I recorded a video of myself, clearly visible and in good health. Just 32 hours later, they put me in front of the cameras looking very different, while insisting I had been treated well and was speaking freely.
In the middle of everything else, I remember feeling a small sense of satisfaction. They were so determined to push the lie that they ended up exposing the truth themselves. In trying to convince the world that I had been treated well, they instead showed exactly what they do to prisoners, and how little they cared whether anyone could see it.
The sad thing is I was only one example. There are countless others who went through the same treatment, and far worse. Torture, beatings, murder, and every kind of abuse have become a pattern, not an exception. Many never came home to tell their story.
For all the darkness of that time, there was at least one small victory in watching their own propaganda expose them. Sometimes that is all you can take from it.
