I think this would be a productive shift in policy, but, despite recent articles on Biegun touting a freeze, there’s still only weak indicators that US policy is about to change.

The core idea in the shift would be what @james_acton32 termed “less for less,” which I quite liked: instead of the proposed Hanoi deal, the US might propose less sanctions relief for a less costly North Korean offer. Neither side gets what it wants right…

The problem will be finding the right “price” for a partial freeze in North Korea. DPRK still does not acknowledge Kangson and other covert fuel cycle-related facilities; verification will be tough. Coal & textiles sector relief would be reasonable though.
