श्लोक का अर्थ:
कुरुक्षेत्र में धृतराष्ट्र का अर्थ है 'धृतराष्ट्र का क्षेत्र'। इस क्षेत्र में समवेता युयुत्सवः का अर्थ है 'युद्धक्षेत्र में एकत्र संग्राम की इच्छा रखने वाले'। मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव का अर्थ है 'मेरे पुत्र और पाण्डु के पुत्र भी'। और किमकुर्वत सञ्जय का अर्थ है 'सञ्जय, उन्होंने क्या किया?'
यह श्लोक भगवद गीता का पहला श्लोक है जो महाभारत के युद्ध के भीष्म पर्व के आरंभ में है। इसमें कुरुक्षेत्र के युद्धक्षेत्र में संजय के माध्यम से धृतराष्ट्र का चिन्हांकित होना और उनकी चिंता का विवरण है।
अनुवाद
धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा- “हे संजय ! धर्मक्षेत्र, कुरुक्षेत्र में एकत्र युद्ध की इच्छावाले मेरे और पाण्डु के पुत्रों ने क्या किया?”
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः ।
