USA will not charge Assange with CIA leaks

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange will not be charged with publishing thousands of internal CIA documents. An indictment for the Vault 7 leak would probably be too delicate.

The US Department of Justice does not want to accuse Wikileaks founder Julian Assange of publishing secret documents of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). According to a report in the magazine Politico, further sensitive information could be made public through a court case.

But today, in a Swedish court, it is about Assange. The request for an arrest warrant for accusations of rape is being negotiated.

Wikileaks had published 9,000 internal documents of the US Secret Service in 2017 under the title Vault 7. The documents showed that the CIA hoards a number of security holes and employs departments that develop exploits and attacks for various platforms. Networked cars were also the target of CIA hackers.
Too tricky for a prosecution

"There is no question that there are leaks where the leakers are not prosecuted because the information is so sensitive and its authenticity would need to be confirmed in court," Mary McCord, former head of the National Security Division in the US Department of Justice, told Politico magazine. The irony is often that "the higher the leaked material, the more difficult it is to prosecute".

A former CIA employee was charged with passing Vault 7 documents to Wikileaks. However, Wikileaks denies his guilt. According to the report, the trial is expected in November.

Tinder must hand over user data to Russian authorities

In future, Tinder will pass on user data to the Russian media authorities. The domestic intelligence service and the police will then also have access to it.

Russian authorities are demanding the release of user data from the dating app Tinder. The Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor announced in Moscow on Monday that Tinder's operators are obliged to store the information for at least six months and make it available to the authorities upon request. Among others, the Russian domestic intelligence service FSB and the Ministry of the Interior could demand the data in addition to the police.

Two keys for all eventualities - Nitrokey (Part1)

1. increased safety requirements

The protection of digital identity is more important today than ever. Stolen online accounts can cause considerable damage if they are stolen and left in the wrong hands. At the same time, the number of data breaches is rising steadily - hardly a week goes by without at least one database of stolen accounts (user name and password) appearing somewhere on the Internet. In the worst case, the provider concerned did not protect the user passwords used or only inadequately protected them with a (cryptographic) hash function that was considered insecure.

Too often secret information falls into the wrong hands and the checking system cannot recognize whether Hildegard MΓΌller is actually Hildegard MΓΌller or whether her account data is being misused by a third party. A remedy against account misuse is to check additional properties or information via two-factor authentication (2FA), which is also controlled by so-called security tokens.

Security tokens or USB security sticks (Security Keys), however, offer other functions in addition to the 2FA that can contribute to increasing (personal) security. Among other things, the private key for e-mail or hard disk encryption can be securely stored on the stick. Such and other application scenarios are presented in the article series "Nitrokey" using the Nitrokey as an example.

2nd Nitrokey

Nitrokey is an open-source USB stick that enables secure encryption and signing of data, among other things. Depending on the Nitrokey version, such a USB stick supports different application scenarios:

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ S/MIME email and disk encryption (X.509, PKCS#11)
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ OpenPGP/GnuPG Email Encryption
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Login or authentication via two-factor authentication
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ One-Time-Password (English)
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Universal Second Factor (U2F) via FIDO-Standard
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Integrated password manager
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Encrypted storage space on the USB stick (+Hidden Volumes)
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Possibility to update the firmware

The Nitrokey variants also differed in the supported cryptosystems, key lengths and Co..:

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ
RSA key lengths from 1024 - 4096 bits
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ ECC key length from 192 - 521 bit
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Number of key pairs that can be stored on the stick 3 / 38
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Elliptical curve algorithms NIST P, Brainpool, Curve25519 and SECG/Koblitz

⚠️ Advice:
Only the Nitrokey Start controls the elliptical curve Curve25519, which is one of the SaveCurves - the only curve where the choice of curve is completely transparent and therefore back doors can practically be excluded.

Why decentralisation is so important

When the topic of a decentralized Internet comes up in conversations, some only smile mildly. However, Sunday's events show how important this topic is.

A major cloud disruption paralyzed many Google services on the evening of 2 June, including Gmail, Youtube and Google Drive. Affected were accounts both overseas and in Europe. Certainly, the so-called platform economy on the web has its advantages. You can quickly post a shorter article on Facebook, quickly check your e-mails on Gmail or upload a series of files to the cloud in between.

Speaking of the cloud. Here is the first problem. The market in this segment is dominated by a few giants from the ranks of the usual suspects such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google, and if we know anything from the market economy, it is that the lack of competition is always at the expense of consumers. If one of the heavyweights fails, as happened at Google on Sunday, large parts of the Internet will be affected immediately. In a structure with a large number of participants, the problem is put into perspective. Every hobby investor knows that it is important to spread the risk.

However, decentralisation is important for a number of other reasons, so it still makes sense to have your own weblog in 2019. The key words here are the account suspensions on Facebook, Twitter and Co. In recent weeks, two major content producers, Freecodecamp and Hackeroon, have left the blogging platform Medium to publish their content on their own blogging platforms. The reasons were manifold, but can be summarized under the keyword "not your platform, not your content".

tl;dr: And what can I do?

So let's summarize once again. A decentralized structure may not always be the most convenient way, but it offers a number of advantages and security. A decentralized structure is better protected against attacks and failures, the whole system is then more resilient.

In a decentralized structure there is a danger that you will be muted - no matter if it is due to account suspensions or changes in the newsfeed algorithm - also lower. This is not only important for content producers, but also for diversity of opinion and thus for democracy.

What can we all do? Each of us has to critically question ourselves on a case-by-case basis:

πŸ’‘
Wouldn't it be better to run your own blog and post some of it on the Facebook page from time to time instead of just posting on Facebook?

πŸ’‘ Do I really have to upload my photos to Google or do I better use my own webspace?

πŸ’‘ Do you really need Amazon, Microsoft and Co. as cloud providers or is there perhaps a smaller service that is not only cheaper, but offers more functions and pays even more attention to data protection?

LibreOffice Will No Longer Provide 32-bit Linux Binaries

With the announcement of LibreOffice 6.3 Beta 1, the open source office suite has stopped providing 32-bit binaries for the Linux platform although 32-bit compatibility has not yet been removed from the project's codebase.

"Distro vendors or anyone running a more current 32-bit Linux system can still create 32-bit versions of LibreOffice, as developers have not in any way removed 32-bit compatibility from the source code." as The Document Foundation's Italo Vignoli told BleepingComputer.

Error 451 - Analyzing the eMail Tracking Ecosystem

Online tracking is not exclusive to websites, but also widespread in eMails. We built an open platform to detect eMail tracking, and we'd like to show some results and invite you to participate.

These days, tracking on websites is old news - we all know that it is happening, and we have our established defenses like ad blockers. However, website-based tracking tells only half the story, because many companies also track their eMails to see if you open them, and if you click any links. This area of online privacy has been mostly overlooked in the past, and not a lot of defenses exist.

🎧 INTERVIEW: Emmy Butlin discusses Julian Assange’s critical situation

This past week the world learned how Julian Assange failed to appear for an extradition hearing in London due to his deteriorating health conditions, as he continues to serve a 50-week sentence in London’s super-max Belmarsh prison. According to Assange’s Swedish defense lawyer, Per Samuelson, β€œit was not possible to conduct a normal conversation with him.” A disturbing tale of states and institutions – all colluding to abuse an award-winning journalist still being held arbitrarily as a political prisoner.
