Huawei has immediately lost access to Android and Google
Google has stopped providing Huawei with hardware and software products.
In other words, while Huawei can still use Android itself, most proprietary services will be inaccessible β including the Google Play Store, Gmail, and presumably anything else that requires the closed-source Play Services Framework.

Google reportedly ends business with Huawei, will cut it off from Play Store
Trump's Huawei ban means no early access to Android Q, no Google app ecosystem.
President Trump issued an executive order last week banning "foreign adversaries" from doing telecommunication business in the US. The move was widely understood as a ban on Huawei products, and now we're starting to see the fallout. According to a report from Reuters, Google has "suspended" business with Huawei, and the company will be locked out of Google's Android ecosystem. It's the ZTE ban all over again.

No more WhatsApp? EU countries could force messengers to open their doors
Messenger services such as WhatsApp and iMessage cannot exchange messages with each other. Why? Germany and the EU Commission are thinking out loud about obliging providers to open up. Small providers like Threema are sceptical. But developers are already working on a new protocol.
WhatsApp is an island on the Internet. If you use the app, you can make phone calls and exchange messages with people on the island. But people away from the island are out of range. WhatsApp does not allow exchange with other services.
WhatsApp belongs to the Facebook group. The messenger service is a central instrument for Facebook's global data collection. Facebook focuses on the network effect - the more people use its services, the more useful they are.
With WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, the Group owns three of the world's most popular messenger services. They are expected to merge soon. Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram together have approximately 2.7 billion users worldwide, according to the company. In the future, it will become increasingly difficult to escape from Facebook's island.
Building bridges between the islands
Since the Cambridge-Analytica scandal, politicians in Europe have been thinking out loud about how to limit Facebook's market power. Justice Minister Katarina Barley is now taking the initiative. "I want it to be possible to communicate barrier-free between Threema, Signal, Whatsapp, etc.," wrote Barley, SPD's top candidate in the EU election campaign, recently on Twitter.
Barley believes that messenger services, like e-mail and telephone services, should allow users of other providers to contact each other. The idea met with great approval in the Bundestag last year.
Europe's probably most powerful digital politician, EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, also shows sympathy for the idea. Users should have it easier to break out of the captivity of the "one service, one universe" principle, she said at re:publica in Berlin.
The approach could end Facebook's market power in messenger services, supporters hope. This would stimulate competition and in future ensure that the dominance of a single company is prevented.

A massive database containing contact information of millions of Instagram influencers, celebrities and brand accounts has been found online.
The database, hosted by Amazon Web Services, was left exposed and without a password allowing anyone to look inside. At the time of writing, the database had over 49 million records β but was growing by the hour.

πΊ Citizen Scoring in the EU - it happens at home, not only in China!
re:publica
Several EU governments use automated decision-making systems to score citizens, either to spot welfare fraud, detect whether children are in danger of neglect, or determine how much care elderly or disabled persons should get. AlgorithmWatch's research shows that these systems are deployed much more widely than commonly known in many countries in Europe, and that they lack oversight and accountability.

AdAway: Advertising and tracking blocker - Take back control! (Part 6)
1. data collection frenzy
In the last part of the article series I introduced you to the F-Droid Store, where you can get free and open source apps that don't track you or display advertisements. A general recommendation of the article series "Take back control! is therefore:
π‘Get apps only from the F-Droid Store.
However, this advice cannot always be put into practice 1:1. Many users are still dependent on apps from the Play Store or cannot find a viable alternative in the F-Droid Store. Unfortunately, apps from the Google Play Store are not exactly known for their data economy - but rather the opposite. Most apps from the Google Play Store contain third-party software components that display advertisements to the user or track his activity every step of the way. As a normal user, however, you don't have any insight into the app or can't "see" from the outside whether this poses a risk to security and privacy.
Since the apps from the Play Store are often accompanied by a "loss of control", I will introduce you to the AdAway app from the F-Droid Store in this article. With this app, the loss of control can be minimized by putting a stop to the delivery of (harmful) advertising and the outflow of personal data to dubious third-party providers.
2nd AdAway
AdAway is an open source advertising and tracking blocker for Android, which was originally developed by Dominik SchΓΌrmann - currently AdAway is developed by Bruce Bujon. Based on filter lists, connections to advertising and tracking networks are redirected to the local device IP address. This redirection prevents the reloading of advertisements or the transmission of (sensitive) data to third parties.
By the way, AdAway cannot be found in the Play Store because Google no longer allows ad blockers - they simply violate Google's business model. Or to put it another way: Google will not tolerate an app that effectively protects your privacy and security by preventing the reloading of (harmful) advertisements and the outflow of personal data.
