Poll results: ZDNet readers find Google guilty of antitrust, but no consensus on remedies.

By an overwhelming margin, respondents to our latest ZDNet poll agree with the government's decision to file antitrust charges against Google. But how to cure the problem is another story. And just what does Buffy the Vampire Slayer have to do with all this?

Last week we asked ZDNet readers to weigh in on the decision by the U.S. Government and 11 state attorneys general to file antitrust charges against Google. Do you think Google is guilty? And if so, what do you think is the best remedy?

In all, we received 1023 responses. It's worth noting right up front that this isn't a scientific survey, so treat the results as interesting but not necessarily an accurate representation of general public opinion.

New Research Reveals the Hidden Downsides of Link Previews.

The feature is convenient, but it can also leak sensitive data, consume bandwidth, and drain batteries. And some sites are worse than others.

Link previews are a ubiquitous feature found in just about every chat and messaging app, and with good reason. They make online conversations easier by providing images and text associated with the file thatโ€™s being linked.

Apple develops alternative to Google search.

Apple may build its own search tools as ties to Google come under antitrust scrutiny.

Apple is stepping up efforts to develop its own search technology as US antitrust authorities threaten multibillion-dollar payments that Google makes to secure prime placement of its engine on the iPhone.

In a little-noticed change to the latest version of the iPhone operating system, iOS 14, Apple has begun to show its own search results and link directly to websites when users type queries from its home screen.

That web search capability marks an important advance in Appleโ€™s in-house development and could form the foundation of a fuller attack on Google, according to several people in the industry.

Japanese Hentai Is Now Banned in Australia

The comics are now regarded as โ€œillegal pornography,โ€ following fears of child porn being brought into the country.

Australian authorities are reportedly cracking down on the importation of hentai from Japan, signalling the latest measures in the nationโ€™s increasingly hardline stance on the sexually explicit comics.

Japanese adult retailer J-Listโ€”which specialises in the sale of sex toys, anime, cosplay, figurines and mangaโ€”posted a statement to their website earlier this month claiming that Australiaโ€™s Border Force (ABF) and customs had started blocking all their adult products from entering the country.

This includes pornographic hentai, Japanese porn videos, sexually suggestive figurines of anime characters, onaholesโ€”that is, an artificial vaginas designed for masturbationโ€”and any other product marked with a โ€œ+18โ€ symbol. As a result, J-List has been advised to stop shipping to the country.

Codeplay joins the RISC-V foundation

NSITEXE, KMC, NEDO, SYCL, OpenCL, and more acronyms!

Codeplay is joining the RISC-V foundation and bringing their tools to the platform along for compiling and AI. SemiAccurate thinks the addition of high quality OpenCL and SYCL tools will be a boon for the architecture.

Codeplay joined the RISC-V foundation because their tools are being ported to the RISC-V architecture with NSITEXE and Kyoto Microcomputer Co, LTD using a grant from Japanโ€™s NEDO. This is another grass roots research development that is starting on RISC-V and bringing a lot of tools with it. As we said years ago, how the ecosystem fills out will determine the fate of RISC-V and the addition of Codeplay and their tools is a big chunk filled in.

German Police takes over illegal market places on Telegram

Among other things, drugs were traded in the telegram chat groups. Now they were confiscated by the police.

Drugs, forged documents or other illegal goods are not only to be found on marketplaces in Clear- or Darknet, but increasingly also on the Telegram messenger platform. Nine such chat groups were taken over and seized by the police after months of investigation. Administrators and dealers were identified and their homes searched.

China launches crackdown on mobile web browsers, decries 'chaos' of information

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinaโ€™s top cyber authority said on Monday it would carry out a โ€œrectificationโ€ of Chinese mobile internet browsers to address what it called social concerns over the โ€œchaosโ€ of information being published online.

Chinaโ€™s strict internet censorship rules have been tightened numerous times in recent years and in the latest crackdown, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has told firms operating mobile browsers that they have until Nov. 9 to conduct a โ€œself examinationโ€ and rectify problems.

The problems include the spreading of rumours, the use of sensationalist headlines and the publishing of content that violates the core values of socialism, it said in a statement.

โ€œFor some time, mobile browsers have grown in an uncivilised way ... and have become a gathering place and amplifier for dissemination of chaos by โ€˜self-mediaโ€™,โ€ the CAC said, referring to independently operated social media accounts, many of which publish news.

โ€œAfter the rectification, mobile browsers that still have outstanding problems will be dealt with strictly according to laws and regulations until related businesses are banned.โ€

The campaign will initially focus on eight of the most influential mobile browsers in China, including those operated by Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL], Alibaba Group Holdingโ€™s UCWeb and Xiaomi Corp, it said.

Others include the QQ platform owned by Tencent, Qihoo-owned 360, Oppo and Sogou.

Google reCAPTCHA service under the microscope: Questions raised over privacy promises, cookie use.

Web giant insists anti-bot service isn't used for personalized ads โ€“ but cookie claims don't quite add up

Analysis Six years ago, Google revised its reCAPTCHA service, designed to filter out bots, scrapers, and other automated web browsing, and allow humans through to websites.

The v2 update in 2014 added an iframe or HTML Inline Frame, which is a way of embedding one web page in another. Then there was the v3 update in 2018, which added machine learning to the mix, to reduce the need for interaction with bot detection challenges.

The Copperscam

There is a mobile operating system supposedly focused on privacy and security called CopperheadOS. Is this really as secure as it says?

* CopperheadOS is completely proprietary. The Github repositories haven't been updated since late 2019 [1] and source code access is only available to select partners through their Community Builder's Initiative. Despite them parading open source code as one of their advantages, in reality, it is no more open source than Microsoft Windows which has a similar scheme [3]. As a lot of code used in CopperheadOS is licensed under free software licenses such as the Linux kernel and GPL, they are in fact violating these licenses.

* Copperhead broke ties with the original open source project that their product is based on, forked it and turned it into a proprietary product [4]. The original developer renamed the original open source project (which was separate from the company) to GrapheneOS [5] where he has since continued his privacy and security work, garnering a number of talented contributors.

* What remains of CopperheadOS' current form is nothing but a proprietary fork of legacy GrapheneOS code [6]. Due to the lack of any skilled developers to maintain the legacy hardening work, most of it has been dropped, leaving Copperhead with no substantial privacy or security hardening.

* At the time of writing, CopperheadOS is currently missing the September and October security patches (as is a recurring trend for them), leaving the OS with publicly known and exploitable security vulnerabilities. In addition, CopperheadOS has not been ported to Android 11, making it miss out on all of the recent security enhancements [7].

* CopperheadOS is commercial. Using CopperheadOS for merely 3 months costs a colossal amount of money - $150 [8]. Using it for a year costs $600. That costs substantially more than even the underlying hardware. Why would anyone pay this much money for an OS with no tangible privacy or security enhancements?

* In addition to the previous point, CopperheadOS also includes user tracking functionality in their update client as is necessary to enforce these fees.

* CopperheadOS is now focused purely on attacking GrapheneOS with constant disinformation campaigns and bogus legal threats sent to developers [9] [10].

Finally, we can conclude that CopperheadOS is quite clearly a scam product. Anyone using it should definitely uninstall it.

Kim Dotcom Can Be Extradited To The United States, Subject to Judicial Review

A few minutes ago a panel of judges at the Supreme Court of New Zealand announced that Kim Dotcom and his former Megaupload colleagues can indeed be extradited to the United States to face copyright infringement charges. However, in an unexpected twist, the Court has granted the defendants the ability to challenge the decision via a judicial review.

Ever since Megaupload was raided in 2012, the US Government has been trying to ship Kim Dotcom, Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk, and Finn Batato out of New Zealand but the path has not been smooth.

The process in New Zealand begins when a country, in this case the United States, asks a local court to determine whether the people to whom it desires access are eligible to be extradited under the Extradition Act 1999.

In basic terms, this means that the US needed to show that the alleged offenses would result in a trial in New Zealand if they had taken place there, i.e the offenses were crimes in both countries. Dotcom has long argued against this assertion, insisting that his long-defunct Megaupload service enjoyed โ€œsafe harborโ€ protections under New Zealand law.

MPA Lawyers Are Trying to Shut Down Pirate Anime Giant Nyaa.si

TorrentFreak understands that the MPA has delivered cease-and-desist letters to several individuals with alleged connections to massive anime torrent site Nyaa. Claiming that they are members of the so-called "Anime Cartel", the notices make several demands including the total shutdown of the site plus cash settlements totaling tens of thousands of dollars.

Every year, TorrentFreak compiles a list of the most popular torrent sites in the world. The vast majority are general purpose sites that link to a wide variety of content, meaning they are of interest to most people.

However, a major outlier is Nyaa, a site focused on anime and other East Asian media. That makes its position among the top five torrent sites in the whole world even more impressive since it derives large volumes of traffic from a relative niche audience

Located at Nyaa.si, the platform is a reincarnation of the now-defunct Nyaa.se and like its predecessor has had its fair share of copyright-related issues. In 2018, Nyaa.si was kicked out by Cloudflare for alleged abuse of its copyright systems, a claim denied by the site. Now, however, things have become much more personal.
