Chinese state hackers target Hong Kong Catholic Church

EXCLUSIVE: Spear-phishing operation targets members of the Hong Kong Catholic Church.

China's government hackers have targeted members of the Hong Kong Catholic Church in a series of spear-phishing operations traced back to May this year.

The attacks have come to light after reports [1, 2, 3] that some of Hong Kong's church leaders and clergy have been directly involved in supporting pro-democracy protests despite orders from the Vatican to remain neutral.

The spear-phishing campaign fits recent reports that Chinese government hacking groups focusing cyber-espionage efforts on the Hong Kong region after pro-democracy protests begun last year [1, 2].

Your personal data is going on a journey

The EU is constructing a number of new systems for the screening, monitoring and tracking of international travellers that places them under an increasing veil of suspicion. Justified primarily in the name of ensuring security, all non-EU citizens attempting to visit the Schengen area will have their biometric and biographic data registered in large centralised databases, where it will be cross-referenced against a host of other systems and used to feed new databases, profiling tools and watchlists...(...)

Google Search Upgrades Make It Harder for Websites to Win Traffic

A push for quicker answers and more ad revenue has made it more expensive for online businesses to reach consumers. Some say the search giant has gone too far.

Type a query into the Google search bar on a smartphone and there's a good chance the results will be dominated by advertising.

That stems from a decision in 2015 to test a fourth ad, rather than three, at the top of search results. Some employees opposed the move at the time, saying it could reduce the quality of Google’s responses, according to people familiar with the deliberations. But the company brushed aside those concerns because it was under pressure to meet Wall Street growth expectations, one of the people said.

Siri, Alexa Targeted as EU Probes ‘Internet of Things’

Voice assistants such as Apple Inc.’s Siri and Amazon.com Inc.’s Alexa are at the center of a sweeping European Union antitrust inquiry into how Silicon Valley uses data to gain a tight grip on growing markets.

EU watchdogs already see signs that tech giants might be restricting access to data or making products that don’t work well with those made by other companies, the European Commission said in a statement on Thursday announcing the probe into the so-called internet of things.

“Once big companies use their power, they can very, very quickly push markets beyond the tipping point where competition turns into monopoly,” EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager told reporters in Brussels. “If we don’t act in good time, there is a serious risk that this will happen again with the internet of things,” she said.

Homeland Security Worries COVID-19 Masks Are Breaking Facial Recognition, Leaked Document Shows

While doctors and politicians still struggle to convince Americans to take the barest of precautions against Covid-19 by wearing a mask, the Department of Homeland Security has an opposite concern, according to an “intelligence note” found among the BlueLeaks trove of law enforcement documents: Masks are breaking police facial recognition.

The rapid global spread and persistent threat of the coronavirus has presented an obvious roadblock to facial recognition’s similar global expansion. Suddenly everyone is covering their faces. Even in ideal conditions, facial recognition technologies often struggle with accuracy and have a particularly dismal track record when it comes to identifying faces that aren’t white or male.

This device keeps Alexa and other voice assistants from snooping on you

Meet LeakyPick, the low-cost audio spy detector for network-connected devices.

As the popularity of Amazon Alexa and other voice assistants grows, so too does the number of ways those assistants both do and can intrude on users' privacy. Examples include hacks that use lasers to surreptitiously unlock connected-doors and start cars, malicious assistant apps that eavesdrop and phish passwords, and discussions that are surreptitiously and routinely monitored by provider employees or are subpoenaed for use in criminal trials. Now, researchers have developed a device that may one day allow users to take back their privacy by warning when these devices are mistakenly or intentionally snooping on nearby people.

Why email loses out to popular apps in China

Email has never been huge in China, and it’s down to a combination of cultural factors and timing.

In May 2008 I was teaching at a private English school in Yangshuo, a small town in southern China. It is an idyllic place to study, with limestone hills, known as karst, decorating the riverine landscape. When they finished their course my adult students told me to download QQ, a Chinese desktop application much like MSN Messenger, to keep in touch.

I asked them to register on Facebook (it was unblocked in China then), add me as a friend and also leave their email addresses. A few did but they were hard to remember, because they often looked something like this: zwpzjg59826@126.com. I thought these email addresses were slightly odd, but back then it was not so unusual to have peculiar email addresses even in the UK.

Years later, I found myself in Beijing working as a freelance journalist and copywriter. I would hardly ever do business with my Chinese clients over email. Often, I would receive copywriting work on my smartphone, via the hugely popular Chinese messaging app WeChat. Once I’d completed it, I would then send it back and also get paid over WeChat. The whole process felt miraculous, such was the speed and mobile efficiency.

Federal court rules WhatsApp and Facebook’s malware exploit case against NSO Group can proceed.

A U.S. federal court judge ruled on Thursday that WhatsApp and parent company Facebook’s lawsuit against Israeli mobile surveillance software company NSO Group can go forward. Phyllis Hamilton, Chief Judge of the United Stated District Court of the Northern District of California, denied most of the arguments NSO Group made when it filed a motion to dismiss the suit in April (a copy of her decision is embedded below).

Major Cloudflare outage takes down Discord, Postmates, and other sites

Internet service giant Cloudflare suffered an outage Friday afternoon, knocking out service to many websites and services, including popular chat app Discord.

According to the Cloudflare’s System Status page, the web services provider was suffering “network and resolver issues.”

“This afternoon we saw an outage across some parts of our network,” Cloudflare told Digital Trends in a statement. “It was not as a result of an attack. It appears a router on our global backbone announced bad routes and caused some portions of the network to not be available. We believe we have addressed the root cause and are monitoring systems for stability now.”

Facebook executives could be deposed by FTC in antitrust probe, report says

The US Federal Trade Commission is reportedly considering taking sworn legal testimony from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg could be asked by the Federal Trade Commission to provide sworn legal testimony as part of a yearlong antitrust probe conducted by the agency, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Last year, Facebook revealed that the FTC had launched an antitrust investigation into the company. The agency is reportedly focusing on whether Facebook's purchases of companies such as photo service Instagram and messaging app WhatsApp were part of the social media giant's strategy to stifle competition.

Twitter Stokes Fascism Fears As Federal Officers Detain Protestors In Portland

Twitter users have reacted in dismay at footage of federal officers detaining protestors in Portland, with senators, journalists and academics describing the actions as authoritarian and fascist. While the exact scale of the federal operation is unknown, the strong reaction is a prime example of the political power of social media, and of how it functions to amplify political views and sentiments.

Oregon Public Broadcasting was the first news outlet to cover the actions of federal officers, who reportedly used unmarked minivans to grab protestors off the street. For several hours, the silence of national news broadcasters and websites meant that it was the only outlet to cover the actions, with additional information appearing only via Twitter.

Internet disrupted in Iran province as police disperse rally

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Police dispersed protesters in southwestern Iran angry over the Islamic Republic’s anemic economy amid a U.S. sanctions campaign, a news report said on Friday, and internet access to the wider region was disrupted as demonstrators shared videos of the rally.

Internet-access advocacy group NetBlocks.org reported the disruption affecting Iran’s oil-rich Khuzestan province late Thursday.

The outage coincided with videos being published online of protesters gathering in the city of Behbahan, some 570 kilometers (355 miles) southwest of the capital, Tehran.

Those videos showed demonstrators chanting slogans heard at other protests in Iran over the last year, including: “Don’t be afraid, we are all together.” Others targeted Iran’s foreign policy, shouting: “No Gaza, no Lebanon, I will die for Iran.”

North Macedonia Probes Election Day Cyber Attacks

The state electoral commission website is still reeling from a cyber attack on Wednesday’s election day and is not yet functioning properly.

Authorities in North Macedonia have announced an investigation into election day’s cyber attack while experts are still puzzled about how the attack occurred on July 15, targeting the website of the state election commission, SEC, and the news aggregator website.

“It is not clear whether the [SEC] website was tested to withstand a large amount of connections for a short period of time, and whether it had the necessary DDoS protection,” cyber-security engineer Milan Popov told BIRN on Friday.
