Google Says It Doesn’t 'Sell' Your Data. Here’s How the Company Shares, Monetizes, and Exploits It.

"Google will never sell any personal information to third parties; and you get to decide how your information is used." - Sundar Pichai

Sound familiar? Although big tech companies like Google keep the lights on by harvesting and monetizing your personal data, they can be quick to mince words and deny the strawman scenario of exchanging hard drives full of your data for a suitcase of money. Now California law has given them another reason to deny and deflect.

Home internet jammed up? Try these steps before upgrading.

With so much of the U.S. workforce — and their families — now cooped up at home to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, it’s not a huge surprise that home internet is showing the strain.

If you’ve had a business videoconference stutter while your teenagers play Call of Duty online, or found yourself unable to stream the news while your spouse uploads huge data files for work, you’ll have a good idea of the problem.

Mobile phones are being tracked with the excuse of COVID-19 virus

--- Germany ---
Starting 2020-03-22, Telekom and Telefonica providers will hand over your phone's movement data to the government and other repressive organizations. This is happening behind our backs using the COVID-19 situation as a cover-up! Telekom has already transferred 5GB of movement data to a Government institute (RKI) on Tuesday.

Click on the following link to start the opt-out process if you're a customer of Telekom:

Telekom claims to anonymize mobile data, which is then passed on to the Telekom subsidiary Motionlogic GmbH in aggregate form. They are also grabbing data related to the age group (by 10 year increments), gender and the first 4 digits of your postcode. After inputting your details, you will receive a 4-digit code via SMS.

Click on the following link to start the opt-out process if you're a customer of Telefonica:

Telefonica is also claiming the same as Telekom, as in they anonymize the data and will only use it for analysis afterwards. The procedure is the same as above, you enter your details and receive a one-time password via SMS.

If you're a Vodafone user, you probably need to go into the app 📱 and disable everything. They have about 20 telemetry functions. Web login doesn't work with Vodafone prepaid SIMs, unless you manually request a password for it from their customer service.

Make sure to opt-out NOW before this goes into effect tomorrow!

--- Austria ---
Same phenomenon is also happening right now in Austria. The government currently receives - "anonymously" - the movement data of its customers from the domestic mobile operator A1. A1 claims its approach is GDPR-compliant. A1 also emphasized that the data could not be used to draw any conclusions about the individual cell phone user and that each cell phone is assigned a number that is automatically generated randomly for tracking. All these numbers are freshly assigned every 24 hours.

--- Italy ---
Italy, the European country hit worst by COVID-19 until now, has also requested aggregated data from the providers to track the movement of people, in order to try and contain the spread of the virus. The vice president of the region of Lombardy said more than 40% of people have moved further than 200-300 metres from their houses, based on data provided by the telecom providers.

--- UK ---
https://theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/19/plan-phone-location-data-assist-uk-coronavirus-effort

--- Other states ---
Following the grave situation of COVID-19, other states are also expected to take the same steps related to the aggregation of customer movement data.

⛔️ While public health might be more important than movement tracking in the current situation, this can set dangerous precedent and open the way for these institutions to normalize similar behaviour and process these data points in the future for malicious purposes.

🤔 What do you as a citizen think? Do you trust these institutions to be benevolent with the data/power they possess?

Tutorial to have Google Classroom app run with microG

Goolag classroom for Android will work if you backup and restore the app data from a rom with gapps to a rom with microg

If you already have microg installed you can try this way:
- Remove microG if you have it
- Install a weebGapps magisk zip. Get one that suits your device from @WeebGAppsChannel (look out for the magisk tag!)
- Install Google Classroom and login with your account
- remove the WeebGapps Magisk zip (with Magisk Manager)
- Install microG again
- In Settings > Accounts, add your Google account (with microG)
- Done!

In other words:
Install GApps, login to Classroom, remove GApps, success

Google Play Store Played Again – Tekya Clicker Hides in 24 Children’s Games and 32 Utility Apps.

Although Google has taken steps to secure its Play store and stop malicious activity, hackers are still finding ways to infiltrate the app store and access users’ devices. Millions of mobile phone users have unintentionally downloaded malicious apps that have the ability to compromise their data, credentials, emails, text messages, and geographical location. For example, in February 2020, the Haken malware family was installed in over 50,000 Android devices by eight different malicious apps, all of which initially appeared to be safe.

Huawei announces the P40 and tries to stay relevant without Google.

Huawei has unveiled new flagship phones today, the P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+. These are beautiful phones with great specs. But it would only take you a few minutes to realize that there’s something odd with them. There is no Gmail, no Google Maps and no Google Play Store.

Last year, the U.S. government restricted U.S. firms from maintaining a business relationship with Huawei. Even though Huawei can only release Google-free phones, the company isn’t standing still. It is still releasing flagship phones at a normal pace. Some day, Huawei might be able to leverage Google’s services again, after all.

Updated list of devices with prebuilt microG",
"The actual list is oneplus7t, oneplus7tpro, def, raphael, oneplus6, oneplus6t. We also updated GmsCore and MozillaNlpBackend packages to include the additional background location permission. Due to that change it might be needed to clean flash the next build because new apks build from us will have a different signature then the current ones. So if you face any issues with e.g. network location backend you need to do that."
Snowden warns: The surveillance states we’re creating now will outlast the coronavirus

Temporary security measures can soon become permanent

Governments around the world are using high-tech surveillance measures to combat the coronavirus outbreak. But are they worth it?

Edward Snowden doesn’t think so.

The former CIA contractor, whose leaks exposed the scale of spying programs in the US, warns that once this tech is taken out of the box, it will be hard to put it back.

“When we see emergency measures passed, particularly today, they tend to be sticky,” Snowden said in an interview with the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival.

"The emergency tends to be expanded. Then the authorities become comfortable with some new power. They start to like it."

Supporters of the draconian measures argue that normal rules are not enough during a pandemic and that the long-term risks can be addressed once the outbreak is contained. But a brief suspension of civil liberties can quickly be extended.
