This is what may have happened.

The 404s, in desperation, fired a S-300 as a Hail Mary pass to intercept a superfly Russian missile.

They fired a la Monty Python - "in a general direction".

And prayed: let the radar in the head of the S-300 detect the Russian missile when at a close distance.

Of course the S-300 didn't have a chance to catch Russian superfly.

So it burned a lot of fuel; flew inertial for quite a while; and when started to descend, locked itself on the first large metallic object in sight.
