“Whoever has overthrown an existing law of custom has hitheno always first been accounted a bad man: but when, as did happen, the law could not afterwards be reinstated and this fact was accepted, the predicate gradually changed; - history treats almost exclusively of these bad men who subsequently became good men!”

“Morality is nothing other (therefore no more!) than obedience to customs, of whatever kind they may be; customs, however, are the traditional way of behaving and evaluating. In things in which no tradition commands there is no morality; and the less life is determined by tradition, the smaller the circle of morality. The free human being is immoral because in all things he is determined to depend upon himself and not upon a tradition”

Following on from the previous quote, here is a very interesting article about Nietzsche’s documented drug use including opium, sedatives, and psychedelics, and how this experimentation with psychoactive substances may have potentially influenced his philosophy. He even went as far as to write false prescriptions signed with his own name “Dr Nietzsche” and expressed surprise that no pharmacist ever questioned his lack of medical qualifications.

“The reproaches of conscience are weak even in the most conscientious people compared to the feeling: “This or that is against the morals of your society.” A cold look or a sneer on the face of those among whom and for whom one has been educated is feared even by the strongest. What is it that they are really afraid of? Growing solitude! This is the argument that rebuts even the best arguments for a person or cause. —Thus the herd instinct speaks up in us.”
