Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq slide as bond relief evaporates, Walmart stock takes a hit

Live updates

US stocks fell on Thursday as bond yields rebounded after the effects of the US Treasury's surprise market intervention proved short-lived and President Trump vowed to squeeze Iran economically, sending oil prices higher.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell 1.3%, or nearly 700 points, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) slipped 0.8%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) declined by 1% after all three major indexes notched winning sessions on Wednesday.

Walmart (WMT) stock fell by over 9%, dragging down consumer stocks after the retailer reported strong earnings but slowing US sales growth as customers made "trade-offs" due to high gas prices

#TradingDay: Can't get no relief  | Reuters

Aug 20 (Reuters) - That didn't last long. U.S. bond yields rose on Thursday, retracing much of the previous day's decline on Treasury's surprise buyback announcement and pushing Wall Street to a two-week low. Another rise in oil prices, and a rare sales miss from retail giant Walmart also weighed heavily on stocks.

In my column today, I argue that the minutes of the Fed's last meeting suggest a September rate hike is still very much on the table. When you consider recent energy price moves, especially diesel, the 35% probability rate markets ‌are currently putting on a hike next month may be on the low side.

What could move markets tomorrow?
PMIs — U.S., UK, euro zone, Japan (August, flash estimates)
Australia unemployment (July)
Japan CPI inflation (July)
UK retail sales (July)
Canada retail sales (July)

Wall Street sinks as bond yields rise, Walmart results disappoint

SUMMARY
Indexes down: Dow 1.32%, S&P 500 0.87%, Nasdaq 1.00%
Walmart tumbles after quarterly comparable sales miss
Consumer staples falls most among S&P 500 sectors, Energy gains most
Crypto stocks jump after Trump calls on Congress to pass bill

Aug 20 (Reuters) - The three main U.S. equity indexes closed lower on Thursday as rising Treasury yields dented risk appetite while disappointing results from retail bellwether Walmart soured investors on the consumer sector and rallying oil prices ‌fanned inflation worries.

Walmart (WMT.O), opens new tab shares tumbled 9.2% after the world's largest traditional retailer missed Wall Street expectations for quarterly comparable sales as rising gasoline prices had shoppers reining in spending. The report dragged down the S&P 500 consumer staples (.SPLRCS), opens new tab and consumer discretionary (.SPLRCD), opens new tab sectors, which were among the weakest of the benchmark's 11 major industry indexes.
