Dow tumbles 700 points, S&P 500 falls as Treasury plan to subdue yields fails

Live updates

U.S. stocks fell as Treasury yields continued their march higher despite the Treasury Department’s extraordinary debt buyback operation, raising concerns that higher borrowing costs will throw a wrench into the bull market.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 703.84 points, or 1.32%, weighed down by a 9% drop in Walmart shares. The 30-stock index closed at 52,759.21. The S&P 500 lost 0.87% and closed at 7,641.16, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1% to 26,067.17.

Bond yields advanced on Thursday, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury note climbing back above the level it was at just before the Treasury Department said Wednesday morning that it will at least double repurchases of 10-, 20- and 30-year debt in the next few months. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC Thursday that the debt buyback operation could actually be larger than the $4 billion that was announced.

The 10-year yield gained more than 5 basis points to 4.704%.
The 30-year Treasury bond yield added more than 5 basis points at 5.248%. The 30-year yield spiked to its highest level in nearly 20 years earlier this week.

The Treasury stepped in yesterday to force the long end down. Today yields are climbing right back up. Gareth Soloway explains why doubling the buyback from $2B to $4B was a BB gun, not a bazooka — while the dollar breaks support and Bitcoin runs to $72,000.

📐 TODAY'S GAME PLAN

🔴 YIELDS VS THE TREASURY — Futures dropped every time the 10- and 30-Year climbed and bounced when yields paused. Side by side, the futures pattern is a perfect inverse of the yield pattern. The 30-Year reversed nearly all of yesterday's move.
🔴 DXY — The dollar was in a bear flag above the trend line and the breakdown has arrived. Next support is near 98. A weaker dollar helps equities but imports inflation, which pushes yields back up — undoing what the Treasury is attempting.
🟢 BITCOIN — The move he called: breakout, charging the battery, then $62,000 to $72,000 in days. Resistance is just under $74,000 up to $75,300, where pivot highs, pivot lows, old consolidation, and the 0.618 fib stack. He is unloading into strength while keeping some skin in the game, and says this may be a bear-market rally, not a cycle low.
🟢 GOLD / SILVER — Gold pulls back slightly after tagging $4,500, where a pivot low cuts the old consolidation. Silver popped but stalls at the line from October 2025 through the June 2026 low, possibly basing for a break.
🔵 US OIL / NATGAS — Crude is popping and may be clearing the wedge, but Gareth cannot tell which trend line is real, so he defers to his confirmation rule: close above the line, then a stronger close above the prior high. Natgas broke out yesterday and gave it back.
🔴 WMT — Down 6–7% on earnings, a big move for Walmart. Shoppers traded down to Walmart and are struggling there too. Day trade $103.80 between two pivots; the gap fill near $100 is the better swing bounce.
🔵 BABA — Falling on earnings after Baidu's miss. The turn is not close, but the P/E gap versus US tech has his attention for longer-term accumulation — the logic that had him buying Bitcoin at peak pessimism.
🔴 AAP — Slammed 20% on earnings. The $43 level hit pre-market, so he watches the $41.30 gap fill and the double bottom at $38.65.
🔴 LLY — His favorite setup: an ascending trend line through major pivot highs, rejected at every touch and more overbought each time, with RSI divergence appearing. He shorted at $1,292 in Smart Money: Stocks and ETFs, targeting about $1,150.

🔑 KEY TAKEAWAY: The market just told the Treasury no. Yields gave back nearly the whole intervention in a session, so the next move has to be bigger — and bigger means more printing, a weaker dollar, stickier inflation. That loop is why gold and Bitcoin rally.
