The HSI started up 61 pts today and briefly reclaimed the 26,000 level in early trading, but swiftly reverted down and closed near the day's low at 25,652.82, down 284.67 pts or 1.10%. Total market turnover for the day was HKD210.942 billion. The HSCEI settled at 8,528.10, down 93.74 pts or 1.09%, with turnover of HKD61.863 billion. The HSTECH closed at 4,824.42, down 95.04 pts or 1.93%, with turnover of HKD51.227 billion.

Singapore shares end higher on Tuesday; STI up 1%

Singapore stocks ended higher on Tuesday (Aug 11) amid a mixed performance from wider Asia markets.

The benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) gained 1 per cent or 55.74 points to finish at 5,754.17.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding led the gainers on Singapore’s blue-chip index, rising 11 per cent or S$0.46 to S$4.66.

This is an extension of its earnings rally on Aug 7, when it gained 6.6 per cent after the shipbuilder posted a 28.4 per cent rise in net profit to 5.4 billion yuan (US$800 million) for its first half.

The worst performer among STI constituents was Singapore Airlines, which fell 5.9 per cent or S$0.45 to S$7.15.

The three local banks ended mixed. DBS rose 0.9 per cent or S$0.66 to S$76.99 and OCBC was up 3.5 per cent or S$1.06 at S$31.36, while UOB finished 2.6 per cent or S$1.14 lower at S$42.16...

Across the broader market, gainers outnumbered losers 327 to 281, after 1.6 billion securities worth nearly S$3.6 billion changed hands...

Key regional indices were mixed. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index lost 1.1 per cent and the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI was down 0.2 per cent, while South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.7 per cent...

S&P 500 posts back-to-back losses, weighed down by tech sell-off and Iran uncertainty

The S&P 500 fell on Tuesday, bogged down by key technology stocks, as hopes among investors that the the Strait of Hormuz would reopen faltered, exacerbating lingering doubts that the U.S. and Iran can reach a broader resolution to the conflict.

The broad market index lost 0.32%, dropping for a second day and closing at 7,728.20. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.60% to 26,445.45. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 184.13 points, or 0.34%, to end at 53,791.85.

Communication services was the leading S&P 500 laggard, falling more than 2% as Alphabet and AppLovin shares dropped 3.8% and nearly 6%, respectively. Alphabet shares have been under pressure recently, notching their fourth losing session in five, since Google announced last week that it’s reshuffling its artificial intelligence divisions.

Aug 11 (Reuters) - Wall Street ended lower on Tuesday, with Amazon and Alphabet dipping, as investors became more pessimistic about a potential ​deal to bring stability to the Middle East.

The Strait of Hormuz will remain closed as long ‌as the U.S. does not change its behavior and accept Iran's conditions to end the war, the newly appointed secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council said.

Brent crude futures held near one-week highs in choppy trading, while the S&P 500 energy sector index (.SPNY), opens new tab climbed 1.1%.

Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab dipped 2.1% and Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab fell 3.8%, both weighing ​on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. SpaceX (SPCX.O), opens new tab declined almost 4%.

Alternative asset managers rose, with Apollo Global (APO.N), opens new tab up 6.2% and Blackstone (BX.N), opens new tab rallying almost 4%. They were among financial institutions that recently partnered with Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab to establish compute-financing platforms aimed at mobilizing more than $500 billion.

The S&P 500 declined 0.32% ​to 7,728.20 points.

The Nasdaq dropped 0.6% to 26,445.45 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.34% to 53,791.85 ​points.

Even as the S&P 500 dipped, advancing issues outnumbered falling ones (.AD.SPX), opens new tab by a 1.2-to-one ratio.


The S&P 500 posted 22 new highs and ‌one new ⁠low; the Nasdaq recorded 108 new highs and 75 new lows.

Strong quarterly earnings helped lift the S&P 500 to all-time highs last week, while the Nasdaq (.IXIC), opens new tab was down about 2% from its record high close on June 2.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was relatively light, with ​15 billion shares traded, compared to an average of 17.6 billion shares over the previous 20 sessions.
