Singapore shares rise after further US-Iran peace talks; STI closes 0.2% higher - The Business Times

The benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) gained 0.2 per cent or 11.31 points to finish at 5,204.01...

DFI Retail Group : D01 +3.8% led the gainers on Singapore’s blue-chip index, rising 3.8 per cent or US$0.14 to end at US$3.82.

The worst performer among the STI constituents was Jardine Matheson : J36 -3.95%, falling 4 per cent or US$2.56 to close at US$62.20.

The three local banks ended higher. DBS : D05 +0.5% gained 0.5 per cent or S$0.33 to S$66.29, OCBC : O39 +1.5% rose 1.5 per cent or S$0.37 to S$25, and UOB : U11 +0.54% was up 0.5 per cent or S$0.21 at S$39.46...

Across the broader market, losers beat gainers 306 to 270, after 1.3 billion securities worth S$2 billion changed hands.

Key regional indices ended mixed. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index lost 0.7 per cent and the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI declined 0.7 per cent. Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index rose 1.5 per cent and South Korea’s Kospi was up 0.7 per cent..

Tech stocks were mixed in early trading Monday as questions continued to loom over the US-Iran peace deal.

On the artificial intelligence front, memory giant Micron (MU) will report its third quarter earnings after the bell on Wednesday, providing another update on the broader AI build-out. On Monday, the company announced a strategic agreement with Anthropic, in which the memory maker will supply Anthropic (ANTH.PVT) with both memory and storage chips to support its data center goals...

Stock market today: S&P 500, Nasdaq slide as Big Tech, SpaceX hammered

US stocks closed mixed on Monday, with Big Tech taking a notable hit, as investors assessed signs of progress in US-Iran peace talks and shares of Elon Musk's SpaceX (SPCX) fell for the third day in a row.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) gained more than 0.2%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell nearly 0.4% after Friday's holiday stock market closure. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) dropped by 1.3% as Alphabet (GOOGGOOGL) swung 5% lower.

Other Big Tech players also saw sharp declines, including Amazon (AMZN), Meta (META), and Nvidia (NVDA). But in the memory trade, Micron (MU) surged to new highs ahead of the chipmaker's quarterly results due on Wednesday...

Looking ahead, investors are gearing up for the May reading of the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge. The data comes as investors debate the chances that interest rates will remain higher for longer, after the Fed struck a more hawkish tone at its latest meeting...

June 22 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq closed down on Monday, dragged by ​declines in the megacap technology stocks including Alphabet, while investors assessed developments in U.S.-Iran negotiations.
The Dow closed higher, boosted by ‌the healthcare and industrial sectors.

SpaceX (SPCX.O), opens new tab tumbled 16.4%, its biggest single-day drop, and weighed heavily on the Nasdaq Composite. It is still trading above its IPO price of $135 per share. The Elon Musk-led company launched its first-ever debt offering on Monday and said it had about $100.8 billion in cash and cash equivalents as of June 19.

Optimism about artificial intelligence has supported ​Wall Street's recent rally, but analysts noted that more investors have been questioning lofty spending on infrastructure expansion by hyperscalers.

Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab fell 5% while Meta (META.O), opens new tab, ​Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab and Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab fell between 2.3% and 4.7%...

The next ​test for the rally will be Micron Technology's (MU.O), opens new tab quarterly results on Wednesday. Shares of the memory chipmaker are up nearly 300% this year.

Seven of the 11 major S&P sectors closed higher, led by real estate and energy stocks. Communication Services (.SPLRCL), opens new tab was a laggard, falling 3.8%...

This view on the Fed has lifted U.S. Treasury yields and pressured stock prices ⁠lower, he said.

A focus this week will be on Thursday's Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data, the Fed's preferred gauge of core inflation. A stronger-than-expected reading could reinforce expectations of a hawkish Federal Reserve, after Warsh underscored the need to curb inflation at last week's meeting.

Markets currently expect a 25-basis-point rate hike from the Fed in September, according to LSEG data.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.32-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 345 new highs and 200 new lows on the NYSE. On the Nasdaq, 2,078 stocks rose and 2,773 fell as declining ⁠issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.33-to-1 ratio.
The S&P 500 posted 29 new 52-week highs and 33 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 144 new highs and 186 new lows.
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 22.97 billion shares, compared with the 22.12 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days

Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI), an AI-optimized server and storage systems provider, surged 15.66% to $35.46.

Investors are watching AI server backlog growth and margin improvement with the introduction of new Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) equipment-based systems.
Trading volume reached 121.5 million shares, coming in about 142% above its three-month average of 50.1 million shares. Super Micro Computer IPO'd in 2007 and has grown 3,948% since going public.
