Markets are showing a massive "change in character" today. In this morning's Trading Game Plan, Chief Market Strategist Gareth Soloway breaks down the newly released CPI economic data. While inflation is still north of 4% year-over-year, core month-over-month came in cool at 0.2% (vs. 0.3% expected). The markets are breathing a sigh of relief — but the charts are telling a completely different story.

For the first time since the massive rally began in late March 2026, both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ have put in a new lower low. Is this the start of a major macro downtrend? Gareth maps out the exact technical levels you need to watch, plus why oil is completely ignoring the escalating US-Iran conflict in the Strait of Hormuz and how the impending midterm elections are already priced in.

Stocks slide as techs falter amid surging inflation

US stocks moved sharply lower on Wednesday after consumer inflation soared to its highest level in three years and renewed US-Iran military clashes cast doubt on the odds for peace talks.

The focus Wednesday was on May's CPI report, which showed consumer prices rose at the fastest rate since May 2023. The 4.2% annual rise in CPI inflation was in line with expectations; however, the hot reading may boost bets that the Federal Reserve will hike interest rates this year.

Energy prices remained the biggest driver of inflation, amid the protracted war with Iran.

Tensions between the US and Iran ramped back up, with the two sides trading strikes overnight after the downing of an Apache helicopter.
President Trump said on Wednesday that Iran has "taken too long" to negotiate and would have to "pay the price." Later, he told reporters that the US would “hit” Iran “very hard” today. Oil prices jumped.

The tech sector is taking another bruising as the rotation out of the AI trade continues, as concerns around OpenAI (OPAI.PVT) and Anthropic's (ANTH.PVTmega-IPOs build. Eyes are now on Oracle (ORCL) results due after market close, as the company counts OpenAI as a customer. Details of its cloud business are in focus, amid fluctuations in the AI trade.

The main event of the week lands on Friday, with the expected IPO of Elon Musk's SpaceX (SPCX). Its debut is expected to mark the largest public offering in history.

June 10 (Reuters) - The major U.S. stock indexes ended more than 1% lower on Wednesday, with chipmaker shares extending recent declines ‌and with renewed tensions between the U.S. and Iran adding to investor uncertainty.

President Donald Trump said the U.S. would attack Iran again if no peace deal is secured. The threat followed one of the most significant exchanges of hostilities in two months in the Middle East war.

Friday's U.S. jobs ‌report was stronger than expected.
On Wednesday, U.S. consumer prices increased 4.2% in the 12 months through May, the largest gain since April 2023, data showed, as the Middle East conflict raised the price of gasoline and other energy products.

The pace of increase was, however, in line with forecasts, as per a Reuters poll of economists.

After the closing bell, Oracle (ORCL.N), opens new tab shares were down about 1% following the release of its results.

During the regular session, Super Micro Computer (SMCI.O), opens new tab tumbled 28% after it announced plans to raise $7 billion through a series of equity and equity-linked financing transactions to fund component purchases for its growing AI server demand.

The rotation out of high-flying technology shares has helped other areas of the markets that have lagged this year, including healthcare, real estate and consumer staples.

The much-hyped $1.75 trillion listing of SpaceX (SPCX.O), opens new tab on Friday, targeting a record $75 billion raise, could also pressure U.S. stocks as concerns mount over excessive optimism in the tech sector.

Last week, Broadcom's guidance disappointed Wall Street — and within hours, the AI chip trade triggered a selloff that wiped over $1 trillion from semiconductor stocks alone. Marvell fell 16%, Micron 13%, Nvidia 6%. And the Nasdaq had its worst single day since April 2025.

In this video, I break down what actually caused this, then go through both the bear case and the bull case with the data, so you can decide what to do with your own portfolio.
